The implication was that now that she had arrived, he wasn't doing as well.
Grace Wilton had long grown accustomed to his way of speaking and didn't take offense. She elegantly asked the nurses in the room to leave and, once they were gone, she glanced around the empty room with a meaningful look, "Where's Ms. Clark? She didn't come back with you?"
Baron Lawrence bypassed her and sat directly on the sofa, adopting a casual posture, "Go ahead, tell me why you're here."
