The sincerity in Old Mrs. Charlie's statement, "I like you," gave Eve Thompson a glimmer of hope.
Maybe if she asked now, the old lady would tell her the truth.
She looked toward the old lady with hope.
As she spoke, Old Mrs. Charlie's smile paused slightly.
After a moment, she returned to her natural expression, and her elderly eyes showed a bit of seriousness and helplessness, "Eve, you're so cute, how could I not like you?"
Eve Thompson lowered her head in disappointment.
The old lady then changed the topic.
Old Mrs. Charlie liked her sister, and Irvin Sharman was going to marry her sister too...
These things were all so unreasonable, but she hadn't figured out anything up until now.
Her expression was somewhat decadent, making the old lady sigh.
She held Eve's hand and then spoke, "Eve, there are some things I can't tell you now. You just need to know that I have no ill intentions toward you, and that's enough."
