Jane Sampson suddenly fell silent, James Black thought she might hang up the phone in displeasure, so, after waiting a few seconds, he tentatively called out her name and asked, "When do you think you'll be back?"
After all, they had only been apart for a week, but, perhaps because he was accustomed to her bustling about, the sudden quiet by his side somehow felt unfamiliar.
Every time James Black returned to his dormitory alone, he felt that having someone to liven things up a bit was quite nice, actually.
"Are you missing me terribly?" Jane Sampson suddenly brightened up again, "Always asking when I'm coming back. I've only been away for a week. Do you feel like 'a day apart seems like three years', missing me every day to the point where you can't even enjoy your tea or your meal?"
"Jane Sampson, are you asking for a scolding?" James Black's voice took on a slight edge, "Speak properly."
