"Promise me, starting now, don't mention this to anyone, and even after you've looked at the information, you're not allowed to tell the Chief. Otherwise, if you spill the beans, you won't be seeing your Goddess Sampton anymore."
Peter Gingery was emphatic, repeating his admonitions over and over until Lieutenant Johnson, looking utterly bewildered, nodded, and only then did Peter finally leave. It was impermissible for James Black to know beforehand about Jane Sampson coming to the guard team for the show recording - if he did, he would definitely remove Jane Sampson from the list of personnel.
Don't ask Peter why, for even he didn't know the answer.
But it was his gut feeling, based on what he knew about James, that James would indeed do such a thing.
With his face full of confusion after Peter's words, Lieutenant Johnson returned to his office and immediately opened the documents that had arrived that morning and that he hadn't had time to look at yet.
