James Black didn't know whether to be angry or to laugh.
James sat up again, placing her on his knee once more, his thumbs gently massaging her temples on both sides.
"You could have said something if you felt unwell at the beginning. Why bear it in silence?" James couldn't help but ask, his tone carrying a hint of reproach.
"I couldn't say it," Jane mumbled. "You didn't want me to go out, but I insisted. If I complained about feeling unwell, you would be upset."
"At other times, I don't seem to recall you being afraid of upsetting me." James scoffed. At other times, she seemed all too eager to anger him, very much to his annoyance.
Jane pursed her lips and said nothing, but her expression clearly showed she wanted to refute James's words.
"Speak up," James demanded, probably disliking this side of Jane Sampson the most, the side that had plenty to say but stubbornly wouldn't utter a word.
