In the end, it was James Black who lost his patience and pulled her into his arms, then placed her two hands on his waist, having her hold him just as she had held Brooke Black.
Then he heard the person in his arms complaining in a delicate voice, "It's so hard and uncomfortable."

James Black was holding Jane Sampson. When Father Gingery drove the car out of the parking lot, he single-handedly lifted her onto the car backseat, waited for Jane Sampson to settle down, then leaned in to sit down himself, and again reached out to embrace the little drunkard, letting her rest in his arms.
