After hearing the sound of water rushing in the bath room, James Black picked up the menu from the tabletop and flipped through it, then used the landline inside the room to call for a meal.
Jane Sampson came out of the bath room to find James sitting on the sofa, inspecting something in his hands, but she couldn't tell what it was.
Hearing her, James looked up at Jane and gave her a look that suggested she come sit by him, without saying a word.
Jane shuffled slowly over with tiny steps, glancing at the backpack next to her. Then in a soft voice, she asked, "Aren't you staying at the guesthouse with Peter Gingery?"
"Mhm," James responded in a deep voice, then opened the box he was holding, bent over, and applied the ointment from the jar onto Jane's somewhat swollen toenail.
It was then that Jane realized what he had been studying in his hand was the ointment, and the bag he had carried in was from a pharmacy nearby.
