Ruby Gregory leaned against Steve Burton's chest, admiring the flowing contours of his jawline. She felt as if she were floating on a cloud, feeling light and soft. Irresistibly, she leaned further into his embrace.
His steady footsteps made her feel secure, and she could clearly hear his powerful heartbeat. It gently pounded against her chest like a hammer, making her feel flustered, yet eagerly anticipating that they could linger in the liminal path from couch to bed, as if it stretched on forever.
Eventually, Steve gently placed Ruby on the bed.
Separated from his embrace, Ruby felt an emptiness in her heart. She instinctively looked up at him.
Not revealing any emotion, Steve used his slender fingers to pull the blanket up over her. He turned off the lamp beside her before saying softly, "Sleep."
Ruby looked at Steve standing beside the bed and asked, "Aren't you going to sleep?"
Steve replied indifferently, "I still have some work to deal with."
