Chapter 20 - Ch-20: Whispers of Deceit

Within the dimly lit chamber, the air grew thick with tension as Karnasagar recounted the harrowing events that had unfolded during the recent attack on their military camp. His eyes, usually a reflection of his seasoned command, now held a flicker of genuine concern.

"As the sun's golden embrace dipped below the horizon," Karnasagar began, his deep voice resonating through the chamber, "our camp, shrouded in the cloak of twilight, became a chaotic battlefield. It was no mere raid, my Queen; it was a meticulously orchestrated assault."

Queen Kamala, the embodiment of regal grace and composure, sat with unwavering attention. She was not only the sovereign but also a strategist of unmatched acumen. Her eyes, however, betrayed a hint of suspicion.

Karnasagar continued his account, his words measured and deliberate. "Amidst the cacophony of clashing steel and desperate shouts, one of the bandits made a grave error. He mentioned that they had received precise information, information that could only have come from someone within our ranks—someone close enough to access our strategic plans and divulge our positions."

A flicker of realization crossed the Queen's countenance, imperceptible to most but not to Karnasagar. The implication was clear: there were spies within the very walls of the palace, lurking in the shadows and infiltrating the inner sanctum to gather critical intelligence.

Kundavai, the Princess, watched this silent exchange between her mother and the commander. Her curiosity, which had initially sparked at Karnasagar's entrance, now twisted into a knot of unease. For the first time in her sheltered existence, she felt a vulnerability within the very confines of her chamber, despite the vigilant presence of her guards.

Finally, Queen Kamala broke her silence, her voice steady but bearing the weight of concern. "Karnasagar, we must act swiftly. Our kingdom's security is on a precipice, and we cannot permit treachery to flourish within these hallowed walls. We shall root out these spies, expose them, and deal with them accordingly."

Karnasagar's visage bore the unmistakable stamp of resolve as he nodded in agreement. "I shall assemble a team of our most trusted agents, my Queen, and we shall commence the investigation without delay. Those who dare to betray the realm shall be brought to justice."

Suddenly the Queen changed the topic and asked "And what about the other matter". The Queen as actually inquiring about the real truth of the black magic incident.

As Karnasagar began recounting his investigation, his expression underwent a peculiar transformation that left both the Queen and the Princess intrigued. His face initially twisted into a look of amusement, then abruptly shifted to a more serious, almost grim demeanor. However, his final change was the most unexpected of all. He erupted into hearty laughter, his booming voice filling the chamber.

The sudden shifts in his countenance were baffling, and the Queen and Princess exchanged puzzled glances. Karnasagar's laughter was infectious, and soon enough, The Princess, her eyes sparkling with curiosity, couldn't help but join in the laughter.

After a moment, Karnasagar composed himself and began his tale. "The place is indeed a small town, and the Mantri relies on the income generated by the blacksmith industry," he explained. "When I arrived, I expected to find a family oppressed by some dark force, as the rumors had suggested. But what I encountered was something entirely different."

He continued, "As I approached the Mantri's house, the family must have mistaken me for some sort of punisher sent by the kingdom, for the scene that unfolded before me was nothing short of absurd. The Mantri, his face ashen with fear, rushed out of his house and fell to his knees, begging for mercy. The entire family, including his wife, children, joined in this bizarre display."

Karnasagar couldn't help but chuckle again at the memory. "They pleaded with me not to punish them and swore that they were loyal subjects of the kingdom. I had to reassure them repeatedly that I meant no harm and was there for a different purpose."

The Princess couldn't contain her amusement, and laughter filled the chamber once more. Even the stern Queen found herself unable to contain a chuckle. It was a rare moment of levity in the midst of a serious discussion about the mysterious Young son of the Mantri, Vijay.

Karnasagar's voice held a steady cadence as he continued his narrative, providing intricate details of the events that unfolded during his encounter with Vijay.

"The boy," he began, "displayed an immense sense of gratitude. He wasted no time in visiting me, eager to express his heartfelt thanks. It was during this visit that I came to understand the troubling situation he faced, locked in his own room by his very father."

The Queen, whose maternal instincts were stirred by this revelation, listened with empathetic interest. Her eyes shimmered with emotion, appreciating the weight of the young boy's predicament.

Karnasagar shifted his account back to his conversation with Vijay regarding the town's weaponry. "But the boy's inquisitive mind didn't halt there," he explained. "He questioned why their weapons weren't entirely crafted from iron, particularly since they used iron in the forging of their swords. His curiosity and intelligence were truly remarkable."

As his narrative progressed, Karnasagar's tone grew solemn. "Yet, during the course of our discussion, the tranquility of our camp was abruptly shattered. The bandits, chose that moment to launch a surprise attack. But because they didn't have correct information of out might, failed to do so as we chased and killed some, but lost sight of them after they entered a cave in the mountains, I believe we were led there to distract us as they fled from our range".

With vivid detail, he recounted the ensuing chaos of the battle, painting a harrowing picture of violence and strife. The Queen's countenance bore a mix of sorrow and concern, her heart aching for the cruel realities faced beyond the palace walls. The Princess, captivated by the tale, was overcome by a profound sadness, a stark reminder of the world's harshness beyond her sheltered life.
