We arrived at the auditorium, there were still seats to choose from, I still had Kaya's hand to hold, so I walked to two empty seats, Kaya sat to my right as to my left was already a person.
Kaya still hadn't said a word since what I said last time on the road, and I was starting to get a little uneasy about it. - Had I been too bold with a person I had just met, I thought to myself.
- Attention please, everyone, !" said a woman on the stage of the auditorium.
The woman had glasses and wore an all-black uniform with buttons of the same color.
-The commencement ceremony is about to begin so we need everyone to take their seats and be quiet so we can give clear instructions," said the woman with a firm tone, at the time I assumed she was the principal or a teacher.
Surprisingly, following this announcement, the students' conversations and whispers were silenced in a matter of seconds, apparently they had great respect for this woman.
-For those who do not know me, my name is Victoria Alexander, I am the director of this University and I will be in charge of the presentation of our customs for the new students, this will also serve as a review for the old students," said the director, thus beginning the presentation.
The ceremony did not take a long time, I paid attention to all the rules of the institution, they were nothing out of the ordinary, Kaya also did not set out to speak during the presentation and the time there passed quickly.
It was obvious that the Organization had arranged everything so that I would be in the same class as Kaya so I wasn't worried about that at all. Once the commencement ceremony was over the students started to get up from their seats, it was time to go to the first class of the day, but just before leaving the auditorium the principal rushed to take the microphone again, as if she had forgotten something important.
- Excuse me, we are having an internal inconvenience, you are free to take an hour before the first class starts, take advantage of this break to get to know the facilities and your future classmates, thank you- he moved away from the microphone and went backstage, in his face I noticed an expression of haste, apparently something important was happening.
I didn't give it any more importance because thanks to this I was going to be able to catch up with Kaya.
We left the auditorium, the whispers from the other students began but by that point I began to ignore what they were saying altogether, there was nothing important between them and any doubts I had had disappeared for the moment.
As we walked aimlessly still without saying a word I noticed that Kaya was nervous again, however not as nervous as before.
-I think it's a good time to talk a little," I said quietly.
Kaya nodded her head.
-Please follow me," said Kaya.
She took my right hand and started walking in front of me, the more we advanced I felt the whispers gradually disappear and I noticed less and less students in the surroundings. Where is she taking me? I thought as I followed Kaya with total innocence, without any suspicion, without any doubt or caution, my self of a few hours ago would have been disappointed.
We climbed some white stone steps, when we got to the top I noticed that there was not a single person in that place, only a tree that had already seen many summers, it did not have a single leaf and its white bark was already decayed inside, what a sad place I thought. It was evident why no one would want to be there, it was evident why Kaya had taken me to this place.
We sat under the tree, luckily the sun was not yet peeking through the clouds because the sad, leafless tree would not have provided much protection.
-I know you must have a lot of questions right now," Kaya said, bringing her right hand to her chest and looking me in the eye.
-Yes, I have a lot of questions but before I ask any I would like you to start if that makes you feel more comfortable.
Kaya sighed and relaxed.
-Of course, this is strange since until today no Watcher had followed by my side after sensing my presence-Kaya lightly pressed her hand to her chest as she said this.
I noticed a slight increase in the intensity of the demonic presence coming from Kaya.
-Don't worry Miss Kaya, you can tell me anything and I won't leave, I was sent here to protect you.
- NO!" exclaimed Kaya, "They didn't send you here to protect me Mr. Neville, they sent you here to watch over me," said Kaya with an agitated tone.
- What do you mean by this," I said confused.
-That's how it sounds, it's just as it seems, the demonic presence is coming from me, there's no catch, I'm not bewitched or anything like that, I'm a monster- Kaya's voice was barely coming out thanks to the lump in her throat.
- A monster, excuse me for telling you Miss Kaya but if you were a monster I wouldn't be alive right now, I would have died when I reached out to you, if you were a monster I would be a failure as a Watcher, but here we are, speaking as humans- I took a pause while I spoke as I looked Kaya in the eyes, my words didn't lie- tell me Kaya, how is this possible?
-My mouth and skin may be human, even part of my soul.... but my heart, my heart its a demon´s one- said Kaya on the verge of tears while still clutching her chest, even tighter.
Her heart? I thought; was she speaking literally? I noticed how the demonic energy was intensifying, it was starting to get dangerous, at the time I didn't quite know what Kaya was referring to but I sensed that the stress she was going through telling me this wasn't helping her much and was giving her a hard time.
I took her hand in mine.
-Miss Kaya don't exert yourself too much, whatever this energy is, it must not get out of control for your sake and for the sake of others. Do your parents know about this situation," I asked looking for a way to get answers without making Kaya suffer more.
I noticed at this moment the sadness in Kaya's eyes as she gave me an answer.
-Yes, Mr. Neville, they know everything.
-Perfect Miss Kaya, at the end of the day I will escort you home myself and talk to them directly, I will also ask the organization for more context, no need to keep talking about this now.
Kaya reddened slightly.
-I don't know if it's a good idea Mr. Neville... to be honest I don't know how my parents will react when they see that you didn't leave like the others.
-If they asked the organization for help I'm sure they will be happy that I can help you," I said confidently and deludedly.
Kaya gave in to my suggestion and nodded her head as she stood up. The demonic presence had calmed down.
-Come on Neville, I hope I can count on your help then," Kaya held out her hand and I took it.
The rest of that day was totally inconsequential, from the class presentations to the conclusion of the presentation of the year's educational plan, all the while my mind was busy disturbing my concentration, I spent the whole day thinking about possibilities, plans and what to say or do. What would Kaya's parents be like?, why had so much information been kept from me?, what would Kaya mean by her heart being that of a demon?, what would Kaya mean by her heart being that of a demon?
I cursed my curiosity for not leaving a moment of peace in my head, it was worthless to ask questions to my own conscience knowing that an answer was totally impossible, even more I could not control it. Without realizing it, it was time to leave, the first day of admission was not long and in itself was nothing more than presentations, it was not a day of learning but one of induction.
I say this but at the time I did notice something in particular when it was time to enter our classroom, when Kaya and I walked in the door a silence took over the room, some students were watching us, others were looking away and pretending to read something. Kaya took a seat in the right back of the room, I took a seat to her left.
Just at that moment before our teacher arrived I concentrated my senses in the room, I set out to try to find any dangerous energy in the area, apart from Kaya's energy I felt nothing else in the room, it wasn't until after a minute of concentration that I noticed another energy apart from Kaya's, it was weak compared to Kaya's or mine but without a doubt it was from a descendant.
I was startled for a moment and opened my eyes trying to find the source of that faint energy in that room. Right in the front row, a young blonde-haired woman with glasses was reading a book, she still didn't notice that I was looking at her, her back was still turned. It was my great surprise when the woman turned in my direction with an arrogant look, I noticed her energy increase considerably.
I held her gaze, her energy was that of a descendant of the Watchers, just like mine, she was still not very strong but with that energy she would never go unnoticed by the organization or by any demon. I did not feel any danger so without saying a word I leaned on my right hand and looked away, focusing my gaze on nothing and relaxing the tension.
"Buaj" the Watcher's second blessing allowed me to hear the young woman in glasses, I turned my eyes slightly in her direction and noticed that she had turned again and was concentrating on her book again.
At the time I didn't give it much thought and went on with the inconsequential day but the question remained a small place in my mind at the time, who was that woman?
