Daniel Cooper laughed at himself as if in self-derision, "Because I'm selfish. I'm afraid if I let you continue to misunderstand me, you might really leave me behind."

Amelia lifted her eyes to him, "Daniel Cooper, you are quite selfish. Always presumptuous, making decisions on your own and keeping everything, big or small, from me."
He raised his hand to stroke her hair, his eyes unblinkingly gazing into hers, "Haven't I just come clean now?"
Amelia looked back at him, knowing he couldn't possibly make a joke out of such a matter to deceive her, and she could guess the rest, but still asked, "So the phone you didn't take from Lilian Parker and the security guards you insisted on stationing outside her hospital ward, were they also for this reason?"
