Oliver Mitchell couldn't resist Amelia's generous insistence and stayed for lunch after all.
During their conversation in the morning, Amelia noticed that Oliver was hesitant and seemed to harbor some unspeakable troubles, so she sent a message to Nathan Taylor to see if something had happened to Oliver recently.
While they were halfway through the meal, Nathan replied to her with the gist of it, which was that the female professor had faced a huge upheaval at home and was in deep debt. In order to help her family repay its debts, she resigned from her not-so-well-paid job at the Research Institute and went to work for a high-paying pharmaceutical company in Japan.
And Oliver, the hopeless romantic, subsequently resigned as well and it took him many days to finally find out the whereabouts of that professor. Later, he had been delayed by applying for a passport and visa, and only today had he managed to board a plane to Japan, and then he was brought straight to her place.
