"Amelia Foster thought she had misheard, but suddenly remembered the words Nathan Taylor had said to her in the car, she couldn't help but ask, "Why didn't you tell me directly when I came to see you yesterday?"
"You put the blame on me before figuring out the situation, can I be expected to welcome that with a smile?"
Amelia ignored the barbs in his words, her fear suddenly resurfacing, she blurted out, "Could someone be trying to harm my dad? I thought the explosion was odd. He'd been in the lab for half his life, he could never have made the basic mistake of causing an alcohol fire, but the police quickly ruled it an accident..."
"Who have you told all this to?" Daniel Cooper suddenly frowned in the dark, his voice carrying a warning, "You can't go around carelessly saying things like that. If the police say it's an accident, then it's an accident. Random speculation is disrespecting law enforcement; it can bring trouble, remember that!"
Amelia bit her lip and suddenly realized she had been impulsively speaking without thinking. She immediately fell silent.
The man beside her demanded in a low voice, "Speak! Did you get that?"
Amelia was startled by his almost growling voice, she frowned and replied, "I got that."
After a moment of silence, she tried to get up again. "Since you're tired, I'll go back to the hospital to take care of my father..."
Daniel raised his hand and pulled her back, his arms tightly imprisoning her in his embrace. He massaged her temples with his long fingers, "Your father has a nurse to look after him."
As she attempted to move, she heard him speak again, "Be obedient, I'll find another kidney donor for professor Foster as soon as I can."
His words held her firmly against him.
The man's dry harsh fingertips were warm. Amelia's tense nerves were slowly relaxing, it seemed her headache had subsided significantly.
She opened her eyes in the dark, staring without blinking at the blurred face close at hand.
Time has flown, and she hasn't changed her stance. Even though her heart broils with hatred for him, after all, he's the man she had devoted all her youth and emotions to; a little bit of affection from him was enough to make her heart ache like pinpricks.
If he had decided to abandon her back then, why didn't he do it thoroughly? Even if they became total strangers, it would be better than the tangled mess they now found themselves in.
Her heart was afflicted with countless grievances and resentments. Suddenly, like a mad woman, she bit down hard on his shoulder, until she tasted blood.
Apart from his initial gasp, Daniel didn't make another sound through the whole ordeal, and just let her bite him.
The rain outside was coming down harder, accompanied by thunder and lightning, the tickling of the rain against the windows drowned out Amelia's soft sobbing, muffled against his shoulder.
The headlights of the car and the gradually slowing engine sounds were also muffled.
Lana Parker sat in the driver's seat, her knuckles whitening as she clenched the steering wheel, her gaze locked onto the two-story white building in the institute.
There were no lights in any of the windows, it looked like an empty house shrouded in darkness. She knew that at that very moment, Daniel was inside with another woman.
While she, the lawful wife, could only watch from the dark, as if she was the one who was not supposed to be seen.
The rain was gradually slowing down but the wind howling grew louder. It passed through the branches of the trees, maing eerie sounds, as if a ghost was crying.
Lana shuddered violently, her back ice cold, she panicked, started the car and hurriedly left.
In the rainy season, a rare sunny day graced Mallowbank.
When Amelia Foster opened her eyes, Daniel Cooper had already left. She looked at the bright sunlight through the window, frozen in place...
