In fact, Edward White did not tell the whole truth.
The first statement he made about not remembering clearly because too much time had passed was the only true thing he said.
What he faintly remembered was that it was the only call he received from Olivia after she left home. He was overjoyed, thinking Olivia had finally seen sense. But, to his surprise, she sharply questioned him if he was the one who ordered the murder of her friend.
At that time, he thought Olivia was being unreasonable. He wasn't a heartless murderer. Why should he kill her friend?
So, in a fit of anger, he scolded Olivia, hung up the phone on bad terms and thought nothing of it, simply attributing her behavior to her love for causing unnecessary issues and put her accusations at the back of his mind.
However, unexpectedly, it turns out what she said was true. The murderer was Sophia Parker.
