Amelia glanced up at him, then returned her gaze to the tablet, giving an indifferent reply, "I'm researching the case I took on today. Daniel Brown said that if I can't submit a report within a week, I have to pack my things and leave."
Daniel Cooper didn't expect her to talk to him, let alone bring up the subject on her own.
Smiling, he sat down beside her, reached out to stroke her smooth hair, and asked softly, "Are you scared?"
Amelia said, "Scared, of course I'm scared. I offended several leaders today. If I get fired, my career might be over."
But Daniel didn't see any fear on her face. Instead, he saw a hint of provocation from those expressive eyebrows and eyes.
He went along and asked, "Why did you take the case then?"
"Didn't I tell you before? Even for Ruby Shane's sake, I can't just stand by. Let alone that Dr. Shane has always taken good care of me."
He casually said, "Oh, I thought you were doing this recklessly because of Zachary Shane."
"What do you mean?"
