Lyra has taken boat rides before, and the speed of speedboats on the sea never scared her; in fact, she even enjoyed it. However, this is the first time she is experiencing the slow paddle of a boat. The closer they get to the center of the lake, the more nervous she becomes. The water surface is so close that she can touch it with her hands, which allows her to experience very directly the fear of the deep lake.
Erwin notices her nervousness: "Are you scared?"
They face each other, and Erwin can take in all of Lyra's reactions.
A strong-headed person like Lyra naturally responds with a firm shake of her head: "You're the one who's scared! I'm not!"
Erwin: "Really not scared?"
