Master Leora and Master Harman, after a brief whispered consultation, directed the adepts to split the remaining students into seven groups. The second test – practical demonstration of Essence and Energies – was about to commence.
A large cleared space in the hall's center acted as the testing ground. One by one, students stepped forward, their moment to shine.
Dax's group was first. A young girl, her braids adorned with tiny crystal beads, stepped into the arena. With a deep breath, she summoned her energies, her hands dancing in complex patterns. A gust of wind swirled around her, lifting her braids and robes. It was a basic energy manipulation but executed flawlessly.
Next, a skinny boy from Ema's group showcased his ability. He focused intently, then thrust his hand forward. A bolt of lightning, although not very thick, shot from his palm, striking a wooden target across the room. Sparks flew, and a round of applause followed.
From Caelia's group, a student who looked no older than fifteen, closed his eyes, concentrating intensely. Slowly, the ground around him began to shake. Pebbles and dust danced as he showcased his connection to earth energies.
The most surprising was the warrior-like figure from Nyla's group. With his broad shoulders and a greatsword strapped to his back, he looked more suited for a battlefield than a magical test. Yet, when he drew his sword and channeled his Essence, the tip of his blade glowed orange. It wasn't large, just a tiny ember at the tip, but the fact that he managed to weave fire essence was commendable.
Then came Aelar's turn. He stood calmly, summoning his knowledge and training. With a fluid motion, he began his Water Orb Invocation spell. The air grew cold, moisture condensing. A sparkling orb of water, the size of a melon, formed above his palm, rotating slowly, reflecting the myriad of lights in the hall. It was a beautiful display of Energy control, earning him nods of approval from both the adepts and his peers.
The hall was filled with awe, envy, and admiration. It was evident that while many could harness energies, only a select few could tap into the raw power of Essence. The second test was a display of skill and potential.
As the practical demonstrations continued, not just displays of prowess filled the hall but also moments of disappointment.
A young woman, beads of sweat forming on her forehead, tried to channel an Essence but instead lost control, causing a small explosion of water that drenched her from head to toe. Another, a sturdy-looking lad, attempted to weave air essence but created a miniature whirlwind with energy instead scattering papers and ruffling robes, much to his embarrassment.
The weight of expectation and the moment's pressure proved too much for some. Nervous glances, shaky hands, and hesitant incantations led to several failures. While some lacked the necessary skills, others, choked by their nerves, failed to showcase their true capabilities. It was a harsh reminder that mastery over one's mind was as crucial as mastery over Essence and Energies.
When the dust settled, and the tests concluded, only 19 potential students remained. From the hopeful sea of faces at the beginning of the day, these were the ones who had weathered the storm.
