Chapter 1 - Modern Online Curses - Breakfast

As I open the curtain, the light from the sun enters my room through the clear view window. I move my curser to open a new tab in my search engine and enter a news site that features a range of articles, from political scandals, economic crises and even to Hollywood and online personalities had no escape from the news site. But one article in particular caught my eye.

[Modern Online Curse causes the death of a student!?]

I clicked on the article and to summarize its content, the corpse of a high school student was discovered inside a classroom early in the morning. It appears that the school janitor was the first to find the body. According to the police reports, the student's death may have been caused by a curse placed upon them. Upon inspecting the student's smartphone, they discovered that the student received a cursed email. While the media did not disclose the exact contents of the email, they reported that the things that happened to the corpse matched the exactly with the description that was written in the email.

"Well that was boring." The person sitting next to me said in a bored tone.

She was the girl who lived in the next apartment, she had jet black straight hair, a cute and somewhat serious face that was accentuated by her gold flower earrings and necklace. This girl was my underclassman back in university, and as for how I met her, well, I'll save that story for another time. For now, let's just say that she has grown quite attached to me ever since. As for why she was in my room, I would honestly say that it was probably because doesn't have anything better to do on a holiday like me.

"Hey how about we watch a movie? I already sent you the link where we can watch that new movie showing in cinemas."

I ignored the girl who was pinching my arm to watch a movie. Well, I could understand why she was bored with what I was reading, as the story was quite commonplace.

Modern Online Curses, or M0C for short, are curses that can be created using a smartphone, laptop, computer, or any internet-capable device. Similar to the way you can buy charms at a shrine or church, these curses can be procured online and can be activated through emails, calls, or simply by visiting specific websites.

To ensure the curse can be lifted, you have to order a protective charm from a particular company, but the price for it is so exorbitant, making it simply impossible to buy for the common man.

Because of that there are rumors spreading on forum sites suggesting that the people selling these charms are the same ones creating these curses. While the reality seems to resemble a virus scheme, where those selling the antivirus are also responsible for the virus itself.

It's just impossible to determine whether this is true or not, but the key distinction between this and that scenario is that these curses have the potential to actually kill people.

As someone who has never experienced being cursed and lacks the inclination to curse others, I find myself without much to say on the matter more so trying to involve myself with it.

"Hey come on let's watch it! Please!"

I continued to ignore the girl who was still pleading for us to watch the movie together and instead found a new article about M0C. While they are referred to as Modern Online Curses now, there were also curses back in the day that used old communication devices like telephones, televisions, and sometimes even letters to a person.

These are known as Old Century Curses—like the girl that emerges from the television screen after 7 days when you watch a certain video, or curses that form when a person dies with deep and intense rage, those sort of curses.

You see, in the past, people didn't take curses as seriously as they do now. Some perceived them in the same light as UFO sightings at night or tales of blood-sucking monsters.

However, due to a specific incident that occurred a few years ago, there was a sudden surge of interest in the occult world, particularly in curses. The incident involved the sudden death of a prominent political figure from a certain nation before the UN congress. It was discovered that a few days before his death, this figure received numerous emails, phone calls, and other forms of eerie omens about his death.

The people close to the political figure initially dismissed these messages as pranks, assuming someone was merely pulling a trick on them. However, the messages persisted, consistently foretelling his impending death. Due to this, the political figure enlisted the help of specialists to trace the origin of these messages, but they ultimately failed to identify the sender and passed it off as a prank.

The day arrived and just like what was stated in the emails, the political figure suddenly died. What was surprising was that another email appeared on the political figure's phone before he died. Unlike the previous emails, this one contained an image of a clown smiling and below it were three words: "I told you" written in blood red. After this, many countries began investigating the occult, thus marking the beginning of Modern Online Curses.

"I'm hungry. Hey I'm going to the convenience store do you want me to pick something up for you." I told the girl that was clearly pouting next to me.

'No, I'll go with you." She said in an angry tone.

She reached for her small beige bag. Dressed in a yellow blouse and a blue skirt, she wore a black beret adorned with a small flower design on the side and a petite cat necklace. Her attire revealed she gives attention to her appearance.

However, something puzzled me: despite living next door, every time she entered my room, she donned extravagant attire that projected cuteness. I mean, why would she consistently put on clothes that suggested she was dressing up for a date? This curiosity led me to once inquire about it, and she responded with, "So that when the time comes, I am ready." I failed to grasp the exact significance of her words—what time was she referring to, and ready for what? This ambiguity exemplifies the enigma that is a woman's heart.

In response to her, I also stood, fetched my brown coat, and opened the door.

"Let's go." I told her.

"Coming." She replied.
