Chapter 41 - Chapter 40: Rude Awakening

The scouting party, led by Gregory, cautiously advanced deeper into the wilderness beyond the border. The dense forest offered cover for their approach, and the seasoned scouts moved with practiced ease.

As they ventured further into the unknown territory, the forest grew darker, and the sounds of wildlife became more sporadic. The silence weighed on them, creating a heavy atmosphere that put everyone on edge. The warriors kept their weapons ready but maintained the discipline of their mission: to scout and report, not to engage in combat unless absolutely necessary.

Gregory led them to an elevated position where they could get a better view of the surrounding area. From there, they saw the outskirts of the orc settlement, hidden amidst the dense trees. Smoke rose from the crude huts, indicating signs of life within the encampment.

Bennet squinted, trying to make out the details. "It looks like a small settlement. Maybe a few dozen orcs."

Zaira nodded. "They seem to be going about their daily routines. No signs of aggression, at least not from here."

Lucio, who had been unusually quiet since their arrival, suddenly spoke up. "I see something strange near the edge of the settlement. It looks like a prisoner tied to a post."

Gregory peered through the foliage, narrowing his eyes. "That's valuable information. We should remember its location. Let's continue our scouting."

The scouting party moved stealthily, circling the orc settlement at a safe distance. They noted the positions of sentries, counted the huts, and gathered information on the settlement's layout.

After hours of meticulous scouting, they finally decided to head back to the human settlement to deliver their report. The mission had been successful; they had gathered vital information about the orc settlement without alerting the orcs to their presence.

However, just as they began to make their way back, a twig snapped from afar, and the young warriors froze. It was a subtle noise, but in the silence of the forest, it was deafening.

Then, from the shadows, came a wave of orc warriors, emerging like specters from the underbrush. They were being watched perhaps from the beginning, an orc scout might have noticed them on their way and alerted his peers about the incoming warriors.

Bennet's heart raced as he realized the trap they had fallen into. There were not just dozens of orcs; there were dozens more lurking in the woods. Gregory quickly signaled for the young warriors to form a defensive circle, but they were surrounded.

The orc warriors, their faces painted with war markings, approached with menacing grins. The young warriors drew their weapons, ready to defend themselves. Captain Donovan's earlier warning echoed in their minds: "Your job is to scout, not to fight. If a fight is unavoidable, your task is to run and report the situation."

But there was nowhere to run, they were completely surrounded by the enemy.

Gregory, though outnumbered, remained composed and assessed the situation quickly.

Bennet and the other warriors readied themselves for battle, their hearts pounding in their chests. Zaira maintained her composure, searching for any opportunity to break free from the encirclement.

Lucio, despite his earlier hesitation and unease about the mission, gritted his teeth, gripping his weapon with determination. He knew there was no turning back now.

The orc warriors, led by a tall and imposing figure covered in tribal tattoos, approached slowly, their weapons at the ready. It was clear they intended to capture the intruders.

Gregory, displaying the wisdom earned through years of scouting, raised his hand as a sign of non-aggression. He then spoke to the orc leader in a low, measured tone. While Bennet couldn't understand the orcish language, it was evident that Gregory was trying to communicate their peaceful intentions.

The orc leader, initially aggressive, appeared to consider Gregory's words. He nodded in acknowledgment, signaling to his warriors to lower their weapons slightly. It was a fragile truce, but it brought them a moment of respite.

Gregory turned to the young warriors and spoke in a hushed voice. "We need to buy ourselves some time and distance. When I give the signal, we'll make a break for it. Head back to the human settlement and report everything."

Bennet nodded in agreement, sharing a determined look with his brother and comrades. They knew they had to make this escape count.

After a few more tense moments of negotiation between Gregory and the orc leader, a sudden, piercing war cry from the depths of the forest shattered the fragile peace. The orcs turned to face the new threat, their attention momentarily diverted.

Seizing this opportunity, Gregory shouted, "Now!" and the scouting party sprinted away from the orc ambushers, darting through the thick underbrush and racing back towards the human settlement.

Behind them, the sounds of a skirmish erupted as the unknown assailants clashed with the orc warriors. It was chaos in the dark forest, and the warriors of the scouting party found themselves scattered throughout the dense forest. The command to fall back echoed in their minds, emphasizing the urgency of their situation. Panic and desperation clouded their thoughts as they navigated the dark woods.

Bennet's heart raced as he sprinted through the underbrush, branches, and leaves whipping past him. Fear gnawed at the edges of his resolve as he tried to make sense of the situation. Where were the others? Were they safe? These questions circled his mind like a persistent storm.

Then, as if the fates themselves had orchestrated the encounter, Bennet stumbled upon a terrifying scene. He froze in his tracks, hidden behind a thicket of bushes. Before him, Lucio was locked in a fierce struggle with two massive orcs, their hulking forms towering over him. What was even more alarming was the fact that a group of five more orcs was rapidly closing in on them.

Despite the command to retreat ringing in his ears, Bennet couldn't simply abandon his friend to face this overwhelming force alone. Lucio had always been there for him, and now it was Bennet's turn to stand by his side.

With determination blazing in his eyes, Bennet readied his dual blades. He knew that fighting these orcs was a daunting task. Unlike the lumbering Giant Goblins they had faced before, orcs were a different breed entirely. Their massive frames were built for combat, and their brute strength was unmatched.

The air was thick with tension as Bennet lunged forward, his blades singing through the air. One of the orcs turned to face the unexpected attacker just as Bennet's blades clashed with its crude weapon. The impact sent shockwaves through Bennet's arms, but he held his ground.

Meanwhile, Lucio continued his fierce battle with the other orc. His shield and sword moved with precision, but the orc's sheer power made it almost impossible for him.

The young warriors felt the weight of their perilous situation. The orcs were relentless, their strength and ferocity pushing Bennet and Lucio to their limits. Every swing, every parry, and every dodge was the result of their resolve and skill.

The smell of the orcs' foul breath hung in the air like a noxious cloud, adding an additional layer of discomfort to the already intense battle.

In the direst moment of their lives, with fatigue and desperation weighing them down, Bennet and Lucio had managed to eliminate two of the orcs in their path. However, the arrival of the five remaining orcs left them facing insurmountable odds. The situation seemed utterly hopeless, and a sense of resignation hung heavily in the air.

As the menacing orcs closed in, their cruel grins revealed jagged, yellowed teeth. Bennet couldn't help but think about the gemstone Toma had given him—a mysterious artifact with untold powers. He had kept it safe in his pocket, uncertain of when or how to use it. In this dire moment, with their lives on the line, he had to make a decision.

Without another thought, he retrieved the gemstone and hurled it toward the approaching orcs. It sailed through the air, glinting in, and hit one of the orcs straight in the face. Bennet's heart pounded as he watched it arc toward its unsuspecting targets.

The orcs, initially bewildered by this unexpected turn of events, exchanged confused glances. Their laughter echoed through the woods as they gazed at Bennet with mocking amusement. They believed it to be a futile, desperate act, an act of desperation from a warrior cornered and outnumbered.

Bennet's hope wavered for a moment. He questioned his impulsive decision, doubting if the gemstone held any real power or if he had just squandered their only chance at survival. It was a tense moment of uncertainty that seemed to stretch into eternity.

But then, something astonishing happened. The gemstone began to emit a soft, ethereal glow. The forest around them seemed to come alive with vibrant colors as if nature itself responded to the gem's radiance. The laughter of the orcs faded into stunned silence.

The gemstone exploded, releasing a shockwave of mystical energy that rippled through the woods.

From the epicenter of the explosion emerged a colossal creature, standing two times taller than the orcs they had faced. It was a fearsome and otherworldly being, a monstrous amalgamation of the head of a menacing dog and the muscular body of a giant man. Its presence was both awe-inspiring and terrifying.

In its massive hands, the creature wielded a gigantic obsidian-black axe, its surface reflecting the eerie light of the gemstone's final burst. The creature let out a deafening roar that reverberated through the forest, a primal and deafening sound that struck terror into the hearts of the remaining orcs.

With unparalleled ferocity, the beast launched into a ruthless rampage. Its immense axe cleaved through the ranks of the orcs with terrifying ease, sending bodies flying in all directions. Each swing of the obsidian weapon spelled doom for the marauding orcs, and they fell before the creatures might like leaves in a tempest.

Bennet and Lucio, stunned by the spectacle unfolding before them, seized the opportunity to escape from the chaos. They turned and fled the scene, leaving the battlefield behind as they ran deeper into the woods. The sounds of battle and the roars of the colossal creature echoed behind them, a cacophony of violence that grew fainter with each passing moment.

As they retreated, their hearts raced, their minds filled with questions and wonder at the incredible power they had witnessed.
