Chapter 32 - Chapter 31: Stuff of Legends

The group had ventured deeper into the forest, the forest seemed to close in around them, and the oppressive silence was broken only by the rustling of leaves underfoot. It was as if the very woods held its breath, awaiting their arrival at a dangerous destination.

After almost an hour of navigating, they reached the forest's edge, and a chilling sight greeted them. At the clearing beyond, nestled against the base of a looming mountain, lay an abandoned mine. It was a decrepit structure, its entrance yawning wide like a dark maw.

The mine's entrance was encircled by jagged rocks, the remains of a cave-in that had sealed it off from the world above. Over the years, the forest had begun to reclaim the territory, its tendrils creeping up the mine's walls, nature's attempt to hide the dark secrets within.

Captain Igor glanced at Vice-Captain Kai, his eyes reflecting the gravitas of their mission. "This is it," he said, his voice hushed. "The source of the giant goblins. We must proceed with caution."

Vice-Captain Kai nodded, he took a step forward, leading the way into the abandoned mine and accompanying him—a man who possessed a unique and invaluable ability. The warrior with him had mastered the art of channeling his aura to create an aura-based night vision.

A cold, damp breeze whispered from within, carrying with it the musty scent of old earth and the faintest hint of something more evil.

With a subtle concentration of his energy, the aura-user illuminated the path before them with an eerie, ethereal glow. The darkness receded as if pushed back by an invisible force, revealing the intricate details of the mine's interior. Rocks and formations once hidden in shadow now stood starkly in view, casting long shadows that seemed to come to life in the eerie, otherworldly light.

Bennet and his companions couldn't help but marvel at this newfound visibility. The aura-based night vision allowed them to navigate the mine's labyrinthine tunnels with greater ease and confidence. Every contour of the cave walls, every crack in the earth, and every hidden crevice was laid bare before their eyes.

As they pressed on, they couldn't ignore the eerie feeling that they were not alone in the mine. Whispers of movement and distant echoes filled the air, raising the hairs on the back of their necks. The unseen presence of the giant goblins loomed like a specter, a constant reminder of the perilous mission they had undertaken.

The further they delved into the abandoned mine, the more oppressive the atmosphere became. Stalactites hung like dagger-like teeth from the cave ceiling, and the walls were slick with dampness, lending the air a heavy, earthy scent.

As the group moved deeper, they began to notice peculiar markings etched into the cave walls. These crude drawings depicted scenes of goblins, both ordinary and giant, engaged in various activities. Some showed the creatures hunting, while others illustrated them working in mines like the one they now traversed.

The mine's tunnels twisted and turned, leading them into increasingly narrow and claustrophobic passages.

Finally, after what felt like hours of traversing the labyrinthine tunnels, they reached a cavernous chamber at the heart of the mine. The aura-based night vision revealed the startling sight before them—an immense horde of giant goblins, gathered in the subterranean cathedral of their lair.

Captain Igor suddenly looked shocked, his eyes widened, and for a moment, he stumbled backward, as though he had glimpsed a horrifying apparition. Bennet followed his gaze, compelled by the captain's reaction, and what he saw sent a chill coursing through his veins.

Amidst a large number of goblins, they saw a painful truth—a nightmarish scene where humans, their faces etched with despair and exhaustion, toiled as if their very lives depended on it. Helpless men, stripped of their dignity and freedom, worked relentlessly, creating weapons and armaments for their vile goblin captors. The clatter of hammers striking metal reverberated through the cavern, a cacophony that seemed to mock the prisoners' suffering.

As if to intensify the torment, the scene was further punctuated by the presence of imprisoned pregnant women, trapped within cruel cages. Their faces were etched with terror and despair, their cries muffled by the cold, unfeeling bars that surrounded them.

Bennet felt his heart constrict with a mixture of anguish and rage. This was not merely a mission to exterminate the goblin threat; it had transformed into a deeply personal quest for justice.

Captain Igor exchanged a look, knowing glance with Vice-Captain Kai, understanding the gravity of the situation they now faced. This mission was no longer a straightforward military operation; it was a moral imperative, a quest to free the innocent and deliver justice to those responsible for this atrocity.

"We have to retreat, we need more warriors," Vice-Captain Kai reiterated, his voice laced with a sense of urgency.

Captain Igor, however, was resolute. "No, we need to help them now," he insisted, his gaze unwavering.

Vice-Captain Kai pointed to the women, his expression grave. "Captain, believe me when I say that this is very risky."

His warning echoed the unsettling truths they all knew but didn't dare speak aloud. The tales of giant goblin births were the stuff of nightmares. While it was known that these monstrous creatures came to be when goblins mated with human women, darker legends spoke of a mythical abomination known as the "Titan Goblin." According to these grim stories, titan goblins were born from the unholy union of giant goblins and humans.

Cross-breeding was a rare occurrence, with the chances of a giant goblin being born estimated at a mere fifty percent. The notion of a titan goblin, therefore, remained a sinister specter of the darkest tales. But it was not just their rarity that was feared. The stories whispered that these creatures were unparalleled in power, with the might to strike terror even into the hearts of orcs, causing them to flee in panic.

Finally, Captain Igor decided to surrender for now and he commanded that they retreat as soon as possible.

As they were moving back, a bone-chilling growl reverberated through the narrow tunnel, making their hearts skip a beat, they exchanged uneasy glances.

Before anyone could react, a hideous goblin, with warty green skin and sharp, jagged teeth, materialized from the inky blackness above, its bony limbs descending from the ceiling with grotesque agility. Its eyes gleamed with malevolent delight as it landed amidst the group, shrieking with guttural, blood-curdling glee.

The creature's comrades, alerted by its shrieks, poured into the tunnel from hidden crevices and passages.

In an instant, the once-silent tunnel was transformed into a nightmarish frenzy. Goblin war cries filled the air as the horde descended upon Bennet and his group, their savage eyes gleaming with anger and malice.

The goblins swarmed the group with savage determination. Clamoring for their lives, the warriors wielded their weapons with a desperate resolve.

Hugo's powerful arms swung with formidable strength, each blow sending goblins sprawling. His halberd cleaved through their ranks like a scythe through wheat, leaving a trail of crumpled bodies in its wake. His muscles strained, and sweat poured from his brow as he fought to protect his comrades.

Bennet, nimble and agile, danced through the chaos, his strikes were swift and precise, his blades glinting as they cut through the air. Goblins fell before him, their foul stench mixing with the metallic tang of blood.

Captain Igor and Vice-Captain Kai fought side by side, their movements synchronized with deadly precision. Captain Igor's battle-hardened experience and Kai's shadowy skills made them a formidable duo. With a flourish of his sword, Captain Igor dispatched goblins with swift, calculated strikes, while Kai moved like a phantom, striking from the shadows and disappearing before his foes could react.

The skirmish raged on, the tunnel echoing with the clash of steel, the cries of the goblins, and the shouts of Bennet's group. But the tide of battle had turned against them, as more goblins poured in from side passages and hidden alcoves.

It was Vice-Captain Kai who made the call, his voice cutting through the chaos. "We need to retreat, now!"

Captain Igor nodded, recognizing the dire situation. Reluctantly, the group began to slowly back away, their weapons held defensively as they moved in reverse. Goblins, sensing their moment, pressed forward with a renewed frenzy, their ugly faces twisted in wicked grins.

Just when it seemed that the group might be overwhelmed by the relentless tide of goblins, a warcry erupted from the depths of the mine. It was a sound of primal fury, a thunderous roar that echoed through the narrow tunnels with the force of a raging storm.

The goblins, even in the midst of their frenzied attack, froze in their tracks, their yellow eyes widening with a mix of terror and awe. The goblin warbands were notorious for their ruthlessness and viciousness, but this sound had struck a chord of fear in their twisted hearts.

As the echoes of the warcry reverberated through the mine, the walls themselves seemed to tremble in response. Shadows danced on the rough-hewn stone, casting eerie shapes along the tunnel's dimly lit expanse. The tension in the air was palpable as everyone, goblin, and warrior alike, turned their gaze toward the source of the sound.

And then it emerged, slowly and deliberately, from the shadows. It was a creature of immense size, its hulking form dwarfing even the largest goblins. The titan goblin had arrived.

Standing at least twelve feet tall, the titan goblin was a scary fusion of goblin and human features. Its hulking muscles rippled beneath greenish-gray skin, veins pulsating with an unnatural vitality. A tangled mane of coarse hair framed its nightmarish face, which sported a mouth filled with jagged, yellowed teeth.

The creature's eyes were the stuff of nightmares, a fiery orange that burned with intelligence. It surveyed the chaotic scene with a twisted grin, revealing its utter lack of humanity.

The goblins, despite their earlier frenzy, now seemed to cower before the titan goblin, their subservience evident in their body language. It was clear that this abomination was their leader, their alpha, and the source of their monstrous power.

It was a creature of legend, a horrific fusion of goblin and human, a living nightmare brought to life. The tales of its power and terror were not exaggerated, and the group was now faced with the grim reality of its presence.

As the titan goblin bellowed another warcry, the surrounding tunnels seemed to shake with its sheer force.

The battle-hardened veterans among them knew that facing the titan goblin would be a deadly gamble, one that might not end in their favor.

"Captain, I need you to lead the retreat," said Kai, "I'll fight it alone".

Captain Igor's expression was a mixture of frustration and concern. He was a seasoned warrior and had faced formidable foes before, but the prospect of taking on a titan goblin was an entirely different level of danger.

"Kai, I understand your concerns," Captain Igor began, his voice low and determined. "But I can't just leave you to face this monstrosity alone. We've come this far together, and I won't abandon you now."

"Captain, I appreciate your offer," Kai said, his tone unwavering. "But if we both engage, it might not end well for any of us. I need you to lead the retreat and ensure the safety of our young warriors. I'll do everything in my power to hold off this beast."

Captain Igor sighed in reluctant agreement. He knew that Kai was right; their best chance lay in the vice-captain's ability to handle the titan goblin alone. With a heavy heart, he nodded.

"We have no option then" Captain Igor said.

With a final, solemn nod to each other, the two warriors parted ways. Captain Igor led the retreat, ensuring that the young warriors were safe as they made their way back through the labyrinthine tunnels of the mine. Meanwhile, Kai steeled himself for the epic battle that awaited, his every sense alert as he faced the monstrous titan goblin alone in the darkness.
