Chereads / Harry Potter: The New Dark Lord Shelby / Chapter 19 - Dementor's Kiss!

Chapter 19 - Dementor's Kiss!

After a hearty meal, Dumbledore led the assembled students in singing the school anthem. Following this, he made a special announcement, cautioning everyone against venturing into the right corridor on the fourth floor. With that, he concluded the dinner.

Under the guidance of their respective prefects, the new students headed to their academy dormitories. Hermione seized the opportunity to sidle up to Artel, inviting him to join her for breakfast the next morning, and then she dashed away with a mischievous grin.

Artel trailed behind the Slytherin students, eventually arriving at the entrance to the Slytherin common room located in the basement.

During the journey, Prefect Gemma Farley took the time to introduce Slytherin House. She began by explaining the significance of the serpent symbol, dispelling various rumors that had circulated about Slytherin. These included claims that Slytherin was a haven for dark wizards, that its members were enthusiasts of dark magic, and that only pure-blood wizards were accepted.

According to Gemma, these allegations were nothing more than jealousy and slander from students of other houses. While she acknowledged that Slytherin had a tradition of recruiting descendants of renowned witches and wizards, she emphasized that the house welcomed a diverse range of students, including mixed-blood and Muggle-born wizards.

Once inside the common room, the prefect proceeded to assign the freshmen to their respective dormitories. Boys and girls were placed in separate rooms, and Artel found himself sharing a dorm with Malfoy and his two lackeys, Crabbe and Goyle, which added an interesting twist to the situation.

After Gemma completed the dormitory assignments, she stressed the importance of cooperation and unity among the Slytherins, with the house's honor taking precedence. She gave a brief speech before allowing everyone to retire for the night.

Artel took the initiative to choose a bed in a prime location within the dormitory.

Malfoy, who arrived a step behind, snorted and exchanged a conspiratorial glance with Crabbe and Goyle. The three of them approached Artel with a malevolent expression.

Malfoy addressed Artel with a hint of arrogance, "Shelby, correct? Listen carefully. In this dormitory, everything will be conducted according to my wishes. Have you ever heard of the Malfoy family? You'll come to understand soon enough!"

Artel, adopting a playful tone, responded, "I'm well aware of what the Malfoys represent – a family with connections to the Death Eaters. I heard your father was one of their prominent members. It's a wonder he wasn't incarcerated in Azkaban."

Artel glanced at Crabbe and Goyle, who stood menacingly beside Malfoy, and continued, "Or perhaps the three of you intend to form a junior Death Eater group right here at Hogwarts?"

"What did you say?" Malfoy's composure wavered slightly, and he instructed his two hulking lackeys, "Teach him a lesson! Let this Mudblood, who grew up in the Muggle world, witness the might of a wizarding family!"

Crabbe and Goyle obediently lunged forward while Malfoy stepped back, brandishing his wand and preparing to incant a spell.

"Ah."

Artel sneered and said little, simply drawing his wand and facing the three Malfoys.

"Dementor's Kiss!"

This was a skill Artel had unintentionally unlocked.

The core of his wand contained a dementor's nerve, and he channeled the dementor's power through necromantic magic, creating a spell akin to the Dementor's Kiss.

As Artel's wand emitted a chilling white light, a colossal Dementor materialized in the bedroom.

The entire dormitory gradually became frost-covered, and the Dementor floated in front of the three Malfoys, exposing its grotesque mouthparts and beginning to drain their emotions.

Artel observed as the three of them paled and then dispelled the magic.

With a thud, the three of them collapsed simultaneously, shivering uncontrollably. Their expressions were eerie, and their eyes seemed vacant, caught between life and death.

In short, they appeared mentally impaired.

"Now, do you understand what a Shelby is? Here's a piece of life advice for the sake of our rooming arrangement: Never mess with a Shelby!"

"Furthermore, I don't want to hear the word 'Mudblood' from any of you in the future!"

Artel sneered at the fallen Malfoys, his face impassive, before undressing and heading to bed.

The following morning, Malfoy and his lackeys slowly opened their eyes.

After the Dementors disappeared last night, they lacked the strength to get up and eventually drifted into a dazed sleep on the floor. Even after a night, their legs and feet still felt weak.

"Malfoy, remember what I said; I'm in charge of this bedroom from now on."

"Of course, as long as you don't provoke me, I generally won't bother with you."

Artel dressed and holstered his wand, ready to go for breakfast.

Malfoy shivered and hesitated, but he dared not speak.

He would never forget how he felt the previous night.

It seemed that he would never find happiness again, surrounded by endless darkness and cold, unable to think, unable to resist, only a faint glimmer of hope slipping away.

Watching Artel leave, Crabbe felt as though he had been drowning and had suddenly gulped in fresh air. After a deep breath, he spoke with a trembling voice:

"I think it was a Dementor!"

Malfoy's body trembled, and he glared at Crabbe, his tone harsh:

"No, no ordinary wizard can control a Dementor!"

Goyle swallowed hard, scrutinizing the other two, and suggested:

"Perhaps it's some form of dark magic. I think we should inform a teacher?"

"Inform a teacher? Are you trying to make me a laughingstock? I refuse to believe it was Dementors! Besides, how could he, a Muggle-born wizard, wield dark magic!"

Malfoy clenched his fists but couldn't shake off the lingering chills from the previous night.

Could it really have been a Dementor?

Malfoy questioned his sanity and decided that he would return home for Christmas to inform his father that it was best to avoid this dangerous individual until then.

"For now, let's not provoke him."

Malfoy instructed his lackeys, checked the time, and sneered:

"Now, let's change into our uniforms and head to breakfast! No one is to speak of this to anyone outside; I want to handle this personally!"
