Black Jack and Bai Jue each pushed a bicycle up the slope; Jian Luo followed at Black Jack's side, her gaze occasionally sweeping across the bloodstained abrasions on the back of his hand.
"You two wait here; I'll go buy some hot drinks and then we can go to the Manor to play games with Jian Qing," Bai Jue said.
"Does the wound on your hand hurt?" Jian Luo asked in a soft voice.
Black Jack was startled. It was the first time he had heard her express concern for him in the two years he had known her.
Meeting his eyes, filled with guilt, Black Jack responded cheerfully, "It's nothing, just a little scratch. It'll heal quickly once I apply some ointment."
"Thank you," Jian Luo said again.
Black Jack gazed at her and suddenly smiled.
"Jian Luo, we've known each other for two years, and this is the first time you've thanked me."
Jian Luo's ears turned red, and with her head lowered, she reverted to the reticent Jian Luo.
