Chapter 3 - Old Faces Renewed

I opened my eyes slowly. Blinked a few times. I tried very hard to think of nothing, to feel nothing, be nothing - just like when my existence unraveled at the end…

It was useless. There was a pricking horror creeping beneath my skin, urging me to check, to be sure - has my nightmare really started again?

"Status." A raspy word hissed through chapped lips, and the clear green panel opened up before my eyes. It was not the same as before - the previous panel was only green, with hidden religious symbols just out of sight. Now, the main colour was still green, but there were no symbols in the corner of my eyes. Instead, the panel was bordered by elegant purple vines, with leaves like eyes, and flowers like open mouths at the corners, petals deep bloody red. Line by line, I inspected the Status I was shown.

- Regeneration: use mana to repair any physical injuries to the caster, ineffective if already dead
- Blessing: use mana to repair the physical injuries of the target
- Family Healing: use mana from the caster to sacrifice the lives and souls of 4 or more direct relatives to the target. Target will recover from all injuries and ailments including death. Excess energy will be applied to target through positive buff/s
- Racial Healing: use mana to select a target and sacrifice the lives and souls of 1000 or more individuals of the same race to provide healing and buffs for the target
- Dimension Knitting: use mana to locate and close tears in the fabric of the world. Side effects for the caster include Soul Rending and Anguish.
- World Healing: Use Mana to sacrifice everything within this plane of existence to acquire energy needed to heal the world.

Subclass Skills:
- Beginner Appraisal: the first skill to recognise plants and materials needed to make medicines and poisons. Only works on the most common items.
- Beginner Apothecary: the first skill for combining plants and materials into medicine and poisons. Only useful for common materials identified through Appraisal.
- Beginner Nature Affinity: can sense part of the health or lifecycle of plants and animals through touch. Only useful for common plants/creatures.
- Beginner Curse & Hex: the first skill to use dark magic on opponents. A Curse can be infused into poison and applied to foe through ingestion, causing continuous damage for 5 minutes. A Hex can be cast upon a foe through recitation of a spell, with arcane gestures and direct eye contact. If cast is interrupted, hex will rebound upon caster. Different Hexes apply different debuffs, currently only available Trip Hex (target has decreased dexterity in lower limbs), casting time 2 minutes.

As I read the long list of skills, nightmares rose behind my eyes - all the battles I'd been part of, the blood scent thick as creatures died around me, as my flesh was carved up by the people who once were my friends-

"Mira! You're awake!" A boy slammed the door open, and abruptly pulled me back to the present.

I looked up, and his face seemed to be stacked on top of itself at least a hundred times - the same smile, flashing teeth, a cut on his cheek, or a smear of blood, and later fine scars. Happy eyes, sincere eyes, cold eyes, mad eyes…

"Earth to Mira, can you hear me?" He asked, poking my cheek, and I flinched sharply. "Okay, that's weird. You have a bad dream or something?"

"Lucius." I whispered through clenched teeth. I didn't want to see him right now. Or possibly ever again.
