Chapter 17 - Curious Encounters in Astrobiology

As Elara and Lysa stepped into the Astrobiology section, they were met by a riot of colors and sounds that put even the most vibrant Aelorian forests to shame. Holographic displays floated in the air like magical mirages, each showcasing intricate data on various life forms. Bioluminescent bugs shimmered in jars, casting an ethereal blue-purple light across the room. Metal orbs hovered over potted plants, emitting gentle beeps as if engaged in some profound botanical conversation.

Lysa looked around, her feline eyes widening with a mixture of awe and caution. "This place is like a forest, a library, and an alchemist's lab all rolled into one. What are those orbs even doing, asking the plants how they feel?"

Elara chuckled. "Well, you never know. Plants have feelings too, you know."

Amidst the chaos, a figure caught their attention. A woman in a white lab coat over a military uniform was hunched over several holo-pads, her fingers flying across the displays. Her movements were a flurry of precision, like a master conductor leading an orchestra of scientific inquiry.

Elara took the lead, her natural curiosity getting the better of her. "Excuse me, are you Lt. Zara Alvarez?"

The woman turned around, her eyes meeting Elara's. A massive grin spread across her face as she activated her Universal Translator. "Yes, that's me! You must be Elara and Lysa! I've been so excited to meet you!" Her enthusiasm was a palpable force, filling the room like a sudden gust of wind.

Without waiting for a reply, Zara was immediately enraptured by Elara's flowing hair. Gently pushing it aside, she marvelled at the elegant curve of Elara's elven ears. "You fit the descriptions of elves I've heard about!" she chirped, patting Elara's shoulder. "Slender, ethereal. The stories didn't do justice!"

As Zara bombarded Elara with questions about Elven biology and social habits, Lysa grew increasingly wary. "Uh, not to be rude, but what exactly are you doing?"

Zara's focus snapped to Lysa, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Oh, my stars! You're even more fascinating up close! A human-cat hybrid!" she exclaimed. Without waiting for permission, she began circling Lysa, muttering a stream of observations under her breath. "Distinct feline features... the tail, so expressive... those whiskers! And such sharp, captivating eyes..."

"Hey! Personal space!" Lysa exclaimed, swiping at Zara's hands.

Elara chuckled, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "I think she's just curious, Lysa."

But Zara, overcome by her scientific zeal, wasn't listening. "Do you have retractable claws? Can you see in the dark? Do you have a preference for high places? Do you—"

Lysa's eyes flared with a mix of annoyance and embarrassment. "I am not a pet!" she snapped.

However, without waiting for Lysa's reply, Zara reached out and started scratching Lysa's chin, much like you would a cat. Lysa's eyes widened, her irritation giving way to an involuntary comfort. A deep, resonating purr rumbled from her throat. The realisation hit, and a deep blush painted her cheeks. She swatted Zara's hand away, her tail flicking in annoyance. "Alright, that's enough!"

Zara grinned sheepishly, her hands raised in mock surrender. "Sorry, sorry! It's just... I wasn't allowed to bring my cat on this mission, and I miss her terribly. You reminded me of her for a moment there."

Lysa's expression softened, her tail flicking in reluctant amusement. "Well, as long as you don't try to put a collar on me or anything, we're good."

Elara burst into laughter, clearly enjoying the interaction. "Oh, Lysa, you should've seen your face!"

Lysa huffed, her pride slightly wounded, but the twinkle in her eyes betrayed her amusement. "Let's just get on with whatever we're here for, shall we?"

Zara nodded, still chuckling. "Of course! But I must say, meeting both of you has been the highlight of my expedition so far. And don't worry, I promise, no collars or pointy things. Just pure scientific curiosity."

The Astrobiology section, already a hub of endless questions and exploration, seemed to buzz with a newfound energy. As Elara, Lysa, and Zara stood amid the intricate ballet of science and nature, they realised that despite their differences, they were all explorers at heart, each contributing a verse to the grand symphony of the universe.

The Astrobiology section of the research dome resembled a futuristic healing chamber from an Aelorian legend. Pale blue lights illuminated the room, casting a soft glow on the sterile white surfaces. In the centre of the room, two patient beds with plush cushions and sleek designs stood side by side. Elara and Lysa sat on them, looking out of place amidst the high-tech environment.

Lt. Zara approached them, her fingers delicately holding two clear vials. "Alright, ladies, I need you both to spit into these," she said, extending the vials towards them.

Elara, the enthusiastic student, eagerly grabbed a vial and complied. Lysa hesitated, eyeing the vial suspiciously before casting a glance at Elara. "You do realise we're willingly giving away parts of ourselves, right?"

Elara chuckled. "Oh, come on, Lysa. We've battled necromancers and dined with trolls. A little spit won't hurt."

Lysa sighed, her tail flicking in mild irritation, but she relented. "Fine, but if I turn into a frog, I blame you." Handing the vial back, Lysa frowned. "What's this even for? You won't use it to make a potion or something, are you?"

Lt. Zara chuckled, sealing the vials. "No potions, I promise. Just good old-fashioned science." She walked over to a nearby machine, a sleek contraption that hummed softly and placed the vials inside. "We're going to analyse your DNA."

Elara's hand shot up, her face a picture of eager curiosity. "What's DNA?"

Zara grinned, activating a nearby holo-projector. A double helix structure, glowing in radiant blues and greens, spiralled into existence before them. "DNA, or Deoxyribonucleic Acid, is the blueprint of life. It's like a magical scroll with instructions to make every part of you."

Lysa tilted her head, her feline eyes fixed on the rotating helix. "So... it's like a spellbook?"

"In a manner of speaking, yes," Zara replied, zooming into the structure to show the base pairs. "These are the letters of the spellbook. Four of them—adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine. They pair up in a specific order to form the book's chapters. Each chapter tells the cells in your body how to function and what to become."

Elara's eyes sparkled. "That's... incredible! So, by studying our... DNA, you can learn more about us?"

"Exactly," Zara nodded. "It can help us understand your biology, evolution, and even some aspects of your history."

Although Lysa tried to mask her interest with a facade of indifference, she was intrigued. "And what will you find in our spit?"

Zara chuckled. "Oh, a whole lot of stories. Stories that have been told for millennia are passed down from one generation to the next. Stories of survival, adaptation, and growth. Your DNA is like a time capsule, preserving the history of your ancestors."

Elara smiled, her excitement palpable. "It's like reading the annals of Aeloria, but on a microscopic level!"

Lt. Zara nodded, her eyes reflecting the same passion. "Exactly! And with your help, we're about to add a new chapter to that incredible story."

The door to the X-Ray room opened, revealing a pristine chamber filled with sleek machinery and an aura of clinical precision. A colossal device dominated the centre, its arm hanging overhead like a sentinel waiting for its subject. The room hummed with the promise of discovery, but it was more of an alien abduction scenario for Lysa.

Lt. Zara handed Lysa a white robe-like garment adorned with intricate patterns that shimmered when they caught the light. "This will protect you from any unnecessary radiation," she explained.

Lysa held the garment at arm's length, eyeing it sceptically. "It looks like a fancy apron."

Elara, ever the curious one, looked at the X-ray machine, her fingers itching to touch. "So, what is this X-Ray thing you were talking about?"

Adjusting the machine, Zara responded, "It's a way to see inside things without opening them up. Think of it like a magical spell that lets you glimpse into the inner workings of an object, or in this case, Lysa."

"Sounds fascinating," Elara remarked, her eyes wide with amazement.

Zara helped Lysa into position, ensuring she was reclined correctly and comfortable. The machine beeped softly, initialising its settings. Lysa, trying to appear calm but failing, finally voiced her concern, "Are you absolutely certain this is safe?"

Zara offered a reassuring smile. "Absolutely safe. The protective garment will ensure you're not exposed to any harmful rays."

Lysa seemed mollified. "Alright then."

Then, in a move that caught both Elara and Lysa off guard, Zara suddenly grabbed Elara's hand and made a beeline for the door, almost dragging the elf behind her. "Come on, Elara! Safety first!"

Lysa's ears perked up, her eyes wide with alarm. "Wait! If it's so safe, why are you two sprinting out of here like there's a dragon on your tail?!"

From behind the protective glass, Zara shouted back, "Standard procedure! Just relax and think of...um, fluffy kittens!"

Lysa's response was a mix of irritation and apprehension. "Oh, wonderful. Fluffy kittens. That makes me feel so much better!"

Watching from the other side of the glass, Elara couldn't help but chuckle at her friend's predicament. She waved enthusiastically, mouthing, "You'll be fine!"

Lysa just sighed, resigning herself to the situation. She closed her eyes, imagining herself in a serene meadow filled with, well, fluffy kittens. The machine whirred to life, its hum a testament to the blend of magic and technology, ready to reveal the secrets hidden within.

The door to the X-Ray room hissed open, and Lysa stepped out, her feline features displaying a hint of fatigue. Before she could fully adjust to the ambient lighting, a burst of enthusiasm in the form of Elara swept past her. The elf, now draped in the protective garment, flashed her a comforting smile before disappearing into the room.

"Absolutely no sense of self-preservation," Lysa muttered, shaking her head with a mix of exasperation and affection. She remembered their shared past, thinking, "But that's why I'm here, isn't it? Because of her nature... her penchant for diving headfirst into the unknown." Lysa's mind briefly flitted back to that fateful day when Elara had saved her from the chains of slavery, a gesture that had forever intertwined their fates.

Lt. Zara, adjusting the X-Ray machine's settings for Elara, caught Lysa's contemplative gaze. "Curious about the results?" Zara asked, her finger pointing at the holo-screen displaying Lysa's X-Ray.

"That's... me?" Lysa inquired, slightly bewildered, looking at the skeletal representation on the screen.

Zara chuckled. "In a manner of speaking. Think of it this way: we're all just brains inside a skeleton suit, wearing a meat armor."

Lysa stared at her for a beat, then deadpanned, "That's certainly not a disturbing way to put it."

Looking to shift the conversation to a less morbid topic, Lysa's eyes settled on Zara's unique attire: a blend of Aiden's military uniform and Dr. Zamora's scientist gown. "So, are you a scholar and a warrior at the same time?" Lysa inquired.

Zara chuckled. "Indeed. Just one of the perks of being part of the Constellar Federation. My parents belonged to the Health and Medicine Strata, and I've always been drawn to biology and medicine."

Lysa's curiosity deepened. "But the military uniform?"

A shadow crossed Zara's face. "When war descended upon my homeworld, both my parents were drafted as field medics. They... didn't make it back." Her voice trembled but she continued, "I took up arms, to defend our world, our way of life."

Zara's voice took on a faraway quality as she continued. "The war was brutal. Its aftermath, even more so. I was adrift, trying to find purpose. That's when Aiden reached out. We had shared foxholes, defended each other against enemy fire, and more. I'd bandaged him up when he lost his arm." A small, wistful smile appeared on her face. "He offered a new direction, a chance to explore, to protect, and to heal."

Lysa listened, rapt. The weight of shared experiences, of loss and recovery, resonated deeply with her own journey. She remembered the ashes of her village, the chains of slavery, and the warmth of Elara's hand pulling her from the depths of despair.

"I'm sorry for rambling," Zara said, breaking the silence.

Lysa shook her head, her cat-eyes shimmering. "No need for apologies. We all have our stories."

Outside the X-Ray room, the dome hummed with life and discovery, but in that quiet corridor, two souls connected over shared pain and hope. As Lysa turned her gaze to the glass, watching Elara calmly observing the X-Ray's progress, she felt a renewed sense of purpose.

"I'll always protect her," Lysa vowed silently, the weight of her promise as profound as ever.

The door to the X-ray room slid open with a soft hiss, revealing Elara, whose eyes sparkled with the same intensity as the holo-displays around them. Without missing a beat, she launched into a monologue.

"You know, the way that machine hums is fascinating! I swear I felt a tiny tickle behind my ears. And the lights, oh the lights! They danced like fireflies during a summer solstice in Aeloria. Do you think if I—"

Lysa interrupted with a playful groan, "Oh stars, not the fireflies comparison again."

Zara laughed, her previous sombre mood lightened by Elara's infectious enthusiasm. "Well, I'm glad to see you enjoyed the experience. Most people find medical examinations quite tedious."

Elara waved her off, "Oh, everything's an adventure if you let it be!"

Zara guided them towards a large table where two holo displays showcased their skeletal structures in intricate detail. "Speaking of adventures, let's dive into the results, shall we?"

Lysa leaned in, intrigued. "So, what do you see? Aside from my undeniable charm radiating from every bone."

Elara snorted, covering her mouth to stifle her laughter. "Oh, absolutely. Especially from that sassy hip bone of yours."

Zara chuckled, "Well, aside from Lysa's evidently charming bones, there are a few fascinating observations." She pointed at the screen displaying Elara's results. "Elara, your skeletal structure is incredibly delicate. These elongated bones, particularly in the arms and fingers, might explain the dexterity elves are famed for."

"And the ears?" Elara wiggled her pointed ears, her eyes twinkling with mischief.

Zara grinned, "Ah, those! They seem to have a complex inner structure. Perhaps they grant you a wider range of hearing?"

Elara nodded, "That they do. It's how I can hear Lysa's grumbling from a mile away."

Lysa feigned shock, "I do not grumble. I... provide constructive criticism."

Turning to Lysa's results, Zara's eyes widened slightly. "Now, this is interesting. Lysa, your bone density is considerably higher than we expect for a human. It likely gives you enhanced strength and agility. Perfect for a graceful warrior."

Lysa smirked, "And here I thought it was just all the fish I eat."

Zara pointed to Lysa's tailbone, which extended into a full tail. "This is fascinating. It's not just an appendage; it's fully functional, filled with muscle and nerves."

Elara teased, "It's also great for expressing her moods. Tail up, she's curious. Tail down, she's plotting mischief."

Lysa rolled her eyes, "Oh please, you make it sound like I'm a mood ring."

As the trio continued to discuss the results, the atmosphere in the room was a delightful mix of scientific intrigue and light-hearted banter. The boundaries of alien and native blurred, replaced by shared curiosity and camaraderie. It was another testament to the wonder of interstellar interactions and the joy of newfound friendships.
