Chapter 34 - CHAP 34: His POV (4)

Catherine manifested a dark attribute, and we had been concealing that from the eyes of the world. Dark attributes had been hunted ever since the appearance of the Demon King 200 years ago. Many was sacrificed and a great chaos had took place. People were terrified even from the simple mention of it. Hence, anyone who showed even the slightest ability of the dark attribute will be obliterated immediately.

"I'm dangerous, aren't I?" Catherine said. Her eyes remained glued at the pouring rain outside the cave. "Shouldn't you kill me before I grow stronger?"

*DRIP…DROP…*

Silence filled the space. Not only was she a dark attribute but she was an exceptional one. The encounter with the bandits before had proven it all. Although she had just manifested it at the time, Catherine managed to wield it without a hitch. If her ability was exposed, she will be executed right away.

"No, you'll live. We'll live a long life together," I insisted.

Catherine had been hiding her concerns, spending most of her time just staring at nothing. Not seeking comfort, no complaining, nothing. I'd rather her threw a tantrum over this unfair fate placed on her. It pains me to listen to her silent sniffles almost every night.

Dark attributes are different from the other attributes. It acts more like a parasite that will slowly eat away their hosts. The stronger it is, the faster will the hosts lose their sanity. The fact that it had took control over Catherine's mind from the get go proved no doubts over its strength.

Again, Catherine stared blankly at nothing. I'm sure her mind is buzzing with unwanted thoughts. I don't want that. I don't wish the sun to go solemn. Now then, how do I grab her attention? Away from those troublesome thoughts.

"….you look ugly like that," I blurted.

Catherine immediately perked up at the mention. As if I had pushed her buttons, her eyes turned fiery. Seething, even. She was no longer slumping and looked as if she's about to jump me at any moment. Her hand balled up into a fist before launching furiously.

"What did you say?" She growled. The shine had returned back to her eyes and it was as beautiful as ever. "Do you want to fight?!" Catherine ground her teeth together as she pulled me by the collar.

"I won't lose to an ugly girl!" I said.

*Well, at least she had got her spirits lifted up again,* I thought.

"What about you? You look like a girl!" Catherine pointed at me with a ridiculing look.

"Better than being ugly," I snickered.

Catherine and I exchanged never-ending banter which then turned into a fist fight. She punched me first and I kicked her off of me. She bit my arm and I pinned her down. She kneed my gut and I pulled her legs. One hit received, one hit returned. Eventually, both of us got out of breath and laid flat on the ground from exhaustion. The dripping of the rain water steadily echoed through the cave. The rain had finally cleared up and the sun had came out.

"Girly face," Catherine said in between her breath.

"Ugly girl," I replied, not backing down anytime soon.

"…"

"…"

Suddenly, the sound of laughter filled the space. It was Catherine's. Hearing the joyful sound of her had put my heart at ease, which made me let out a laugh myself. Yes, this is the Catherine I know. Somehow, that little fight had brought her back. Perhaps she got to vent her worries with it. Catherine really got fired up over the mention of her looks.

Does she really think that she's ugly? Does her looks matter that much to her? In my eyes, she simply looks like somewhere I could return to. Somewhere safe and comfortable. Someone I would gladly call as my 'home'. How could home ever looks bad?

After letting out a hearty laugh, Catherine slowly got up and turned to me. Her eyes was still watery from the laugh, which is far better than her sad tears. "Ah….all that fight made me hungry," she said. "Let's go find some wild berries or something."

"Make sure to show it to me first before eating it. Last time you almost ate a poisonous one," I reminded, pushing my body to sit up.

Rolling her eyes, Catherine shrugged. "Yeah, sure."

The magic stones we had collected before was taken by the bandits. Since the unexpected massacre happened, we didn't even retrieved it and just made our escape. Regrettably, we don't have any money to spend now.

"Let's hunt more goblins after we eat! What do you say?" Catherine asked.

Is she really fine to be doing tasks now? It hasn't been long since the incident. What if she got traumatised again? I wanted to ask a lot but it all just turned into a nod.

"Alright," I answered short as my eyes trailed her movements out of the cave.

Let's just go along with what she wants. If anything happened, I'll make sure she's safe. If she goes on rampage, I'll calm her down. If she breaks, I'll fix her up. Yes, I'll do just that.

From afar, I could see Catherine jumping and waving, shouting eagerly. "Lucius! I had caught a bird!" A pheasant was held in her left hand.

"Bird? How did you get it?" I asked. Amazement was felt when I took a closer look at it. We had never hunted a flying prey before. Not to mention that it was Catherine who caught it. My eyes fell on the large leaf filled with berries in my hand before back at her.

"You see, I think my attribute isn't so bad. I just stretched it up a bit and caught a flying bird!"

Anxiety flooded my heart as I heard that. Taking a short breath, I calmly asked her, "…was there anyone around?" I tried to hide my worries.

"No…" she said reluctantly before averting her gaze, "I think…"

*She must've had not looked around before using it!*

"Don't use it anymore," I said sternly

"But—"

"No, no matter what happened, never use it anymore."

Catherine slumped a bit but I won't budge. No one should find out about her attribute. To top it off, frequent usage might cause her sanity to fade faster

"From now on, you are a low-level light attribute, alright? People won't suspect much when you don't show your ability if you declare so."
