Chapter 38 - An Elite Invitation

The warmth of the afternoon sun streamed through the grand windows of the academy, casting a golden glow across the marble floors. After the intense battles and trials, Kai found a sense of peace amidst the lively atmosphere of the dining hall at the Legion Academy. He settled into a corner table, lost in thought about the recent challenges he had faced. Rio had just left after sharing a meal, leaving Kai to savor a few quiet moments.

A knock at the entrance broke his reverie. He looked up, surprised to see Kyle standing there, his expression serious yet respectful.

"Kyle?" Kai blinked in astonishment as Kyle approached. "What brings you here?"

Kyle walked into the hall, his posture straight and earnest. Dressed in the crisp uniform of the Legion Senior Academy, he carried an air of formality that felt different from their last encounter—a newfound humility evident in his demeanor.

"I needed to talk to you," Kyle began, his voice steady. "After our battle, I've had some time to reflect. I realize now that I underestimated you, Kai. I was too proud, too focused on my strength."

Kai tilted his head, crossing his arms. "We all have something to learn, Kyle. I wasn't exactly perfect either."

Kyle offered a small smile, nodding. "But you won. Fair and square. More importantly, you showed mercy when you could have crushed me." He paused, searching for the right words. "For that, I owe you an apology."

Kai waved his hand dismissively. "No need for that. We were both just doing what we thought was right."

"No," Kyle insisted, his tone firm. "I need to say this. I'm sorry, Kai. For challenging you out of pride."

Kai studied him for a moment before extending his hand. "Apology accepted. We're all just trying to figure things out, right?"

Kyle grasped Kai's hand in a firm shake, a visible weight lifting from his shoulders. "Thank you."

A comfortable silence settled between them before Kyle straightened, his expression turning serious again. "I didn't come here just to apologize. I also have an invitation for you."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "An invitation?"

Kyle nodded. "The Elite Legion Students—a special unit within the academy made up of the best and brightest. We train harder, tackle more dangerous missions, and learn directly from the top generals. I want you to join us."

Kai was taken aback. He had heard whispers of the Elite Legion, a prestigious group reserved for only the most talented students. The fact that Kyle, once his rival, was now offering this opportunity spoke volumes.

"Me?" Kai asked, still wrapping his head around the idea. "I'm flattered, but… why me? I'm just a guy who got lucky."

Kyle chuckled. "Luck had little to do with it. I saw how you handled yourself in battle. You're a good fighter, Kai."

Kai's mind raced. Joining the Elite Legion was an incredible opportunity—a chance to sharpen his skills and face challenges he had never imagined. But it also meant more responsibility and a greater risk.

"I'll admit, it's tempting," Kai said slowly. "But I've got a lot on my plate already. It's a big commitment."

Kyle nodded, understanding. "I won't pressure you. Think it over. The offer stands whenever you're ready."

As Kyle prepared to leave, he added, "Actually, it was Master Mahendra who suggested this. He believes the Vanguard could benefit from your skills on missions, all while you continue your studies. It's a unique position that could offer you invaluable experience."

Kai's eyes widened. The thought of working directly with the Vanguard, even as a student, was both thrilling and daunting. "Grandmaster Mahendra suggested this?"

Kyle nodded. "He sees great potential in you. And just so you know, I also extended the invitation to Alethea. She's already accepted it."

Kai appreciated the gesture. "Thanks, Kyle. I'll talk to Grandmaster about it."

With a final nod, Kyle left, leaving Kai alone with his thoughts. The hall felt quieter now, the weight of his decision settling in. Joining the Elite Legion could change everything. But then again, everything had already changed.

Kai sat back down, his mind swirling with possibilities. But for now, he allowed himself a moment to simply be. Yet, he knew he needed to discuss the invitation with Grandmaster Mahendra to gain clarity on this new path ahead.
