Chapter 1 - Deifying the Unknown

In the Beginning God created heaven and earth, And the Earth was without form, amd void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved to face these waters.

And God said: Let their be light, and there was light.

That small exurpt that was the first page of Bible was the only part Alice could think of off the top of her head.

Alice had never been a religious person, She was a proud atheist, who valued her logical reasoning much more then faith.

Back during the times of the Greeks and Romans, They created gods for phenomenon they couldn't comprehend, Zeus as the embodiment of storms, Poseidon as the god of the ocean and Apollo as the god of the sun, and deified these concepts and worshipped the unknown.

But as technology advanced, human prerogative shifted from worshipping the unknown to Fearing it.

Humans do not fear what they understand, And can't fear something that breaks logic, That's why humanity fears the things that follow our logic, and go even further beyond, Twisting our logic into something we cannot possibly comprehend.

What is beyond the event horizon of a black hole?, What lies in the vast expanse of space, Are we truely alone in the universe?, What happens after we die?.

These ideas while captivating, are mind bogglingly terrifying things to think about and imagine, the mere idea of never being able to know something is the scariest thought to some.

This fear of the existential unknown is most encapsulated in works by H.P Lovecraft, Author of the Chuthulhu Mythos, Extremely famous and well renowned.

With all that said In mind, Alice was first and foremost scared of the unknown, and she couldn't comprehend the situation she somehow found herself in.

"Where the hell am I!?!"

Many thoughts Rushed through her head as she tried to get bearings on her situation.

Alice stood in what she thought to be a dense forest, It was difficult to say exactly as there was very little light, Only lightning bugs, and some glowing mushrooms illuminated small patches of her environment.

She could only see the Vague outline of tree trunks, standing tall into the sky, she couldn't even make out the canopy, as the sky was completely dark.

"I must be dreaming" she muttered, She had had lucid dreams before so she quickly came to a conclusion, and pinched her forearm as confirmation.

But to her suprise, She felt the stinging sensation on her forearm, "I must be going insane" and pinched herself again harder, before coming to a terrible conclusion.

"This.. is not a dream?" she spoke and gave an unsettling confidence to herself in this idea.

She Frowned deeply and started to tap her foot, A sign of her rising Anxiety.

"Okay, Stop. Calm down. There's probably a reasonable Explanation I just need to find it."

Alice's Memories right before her sudden appearance at this strange place were foggy at best.

from what she remembered, Alice was walking down the sidewalk, as She blinked, opened her eyes, and found herself here.

"Was I kidnapped..?" she wondered before realizing just how many flaws this idea had.

"why would someone want to kidnap me"

"Why would they leave me in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night unharmed"

"how would they have even kidnapped me and transported me to this place"

she could barely make out the trunk of the tree but knew it was not native to any tree she had ever seen before, with Bark that swirled in large spiral patterns.

"am I dead..? is this hell..? or something?" she muttered as her mind took her to an unorthodox hypothesis, but this too also had few merits, Alice was completely healthy for all she knew, Nor did she have any Genetic diseases hiding dormant.

She also assumed hell would be a much more... Firey place then this.

She Racked her brain for Reasonings but no shoe was the exact fit, Her Anxiety started to spike as she nervously looked around.

Alice did not know what kind of animals lived in this place, for all she knew, she could encounter a bear or wolf pack and be mauled to death.

The thought of dying was not one she thought she would be entertaining until old age.
