Chereads / End of the World Safe Zone / Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5

Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5

Right at the crack of dawn, Shen Tian was woken up by an alarm.

Opening one eye, he realized that it was the system that was making the noise. He tried to cover his ears with the pillow underneath his head, but the noise didn't reduce in loudness even a little bit. After all, the noise the system is making is in his head, and so there's really no way to turn it down unless he talks to the system.

"Why are you so noisy so early in the morning??"

[[ Notification: Day 1 in safe zone has safely passed. Chain quest triggered. ]]

"Is this why you woke me up?", Shen Tian asked helplessly. "Can't you wait until I woke up naturally before sending me quests??"

Despite grumbling, he got out of bed and went to the sink to wash his face. After washing his face with the cold water, he felt much more awake and refreshed.

"Well, let's get this quest out of the way, shall we?"

Shen Tian looked at the system panel again, this time focusing more on the quest information.

[[ Chain quest information: Congratulations to the host for spending your first day on the safe zone without any issues! As this safe zone is your haven against zombies, it is important that you work hard to improve the facilities and make sure that you have a stable supply of basic necessities. The first in your list is food. Within 24 hours, the host must make sure to establish a stable food supply not only for himself but also for future residents of the safe zone.

Quest 1 requirement: Deposit 5 crystal cores into the system terminal.

Building rewards: Farm (1 acre of arable land)

Other rewards: 100 rice seedlings, 100 potato seedlings ]]

"Well, this quest is good." Shen Tian nodded his head while rubbing his chin. "My supplies won't last long and being able to open a farm to plant rice seedlings and potato seedlings should help solve the issue of basic food. But is it just rice and potato seedlings, though? I can't imagine myself just eating rice and potato all the time."

"Hmmm.."

"Since this is a chain quest, there should be a second quest, right?"

Shen Tian looked at the system panel closely and discovered the "next" arrow at the bottom.

"Oh, okay, so additional info is on the next page, huh?"

[[ Restricted. Not available unless Quest 1 is completed. ]]

"Not available, huh?", Shen Tian grumbled. "There should be a preview at least, don't you think so?"

He let out a long breath before bringing his focus back on what he needs to do for Quest 1.

"Since I need 5 crystal cores, then that means I have to defeat 5 zombies, right?"

Scratching his head, Shen Tian shifted his eyes toward the door. At the side, the bat that he was using yesterday to kill zombies was placed leaning on the wall. It was a bit battered and with little durability left. In fact, as per Shen Tian's estimation, it may only be enough to bash the head of one or two zombies.

"This is a bit of a pickle, then."

Without the bat, he doesn't have any other weapon that he can use to kill zombies.

Shen Tian decided to look around the house again to see if there's anything that he can use as a weapon. He was hoping to find a pipe or something similar. Although it's a bit of a reach, he's hoping to find a gun as well, but he knows deep in his heart that such a weapon can't just be lying around this house.

After thirty minutes, though, he plopped down the sofa, and helplessly called out the system.

"System, aren't you too heartless? I don't even have a weapon to kill zombies!"

[[ Notification: Please, host, be resourceful. Establishing the habit of using the things you currently have instead of relying on the system will increase your resourcefulness, which can help you survive better in this world. ]]

See those words from the system panel, he felt that a vein popped in his forehead. He understands that the system is training him for survival, but that doesn't mean that he won't get angry.

'This damn system!'

He let out a frustrated breath. It looks like he'll need to improvise in order to have another weapon aside from the bat.

He stood up once again and went to the kitchen. Earlier, he saw a kitchen knife there.

Initially, he didn't want to use the knife because he thought he might use it for chopping vegetables or meat when he has more food supplies in the future. After all, he may not be able to find another knife if he loses this one. However, with the system not giving him any other weapon, this one is the closest weapon he could have.

Of course, just the kitchen knife itself won't be enough. First off, he has non-existent close combat skills. Using a knife means he needs to get as close as possible to zombies to kill them. He planned to affix it at the end of a stick so he can afford to keep a little bit of distance when fighting.

He went out of the house to look for any straight branches that he can use. Fortunately, he was able to find one. He proceeded to tie the knife. It didn't take long before he had his makeshift spear ready.

Once he's assured of the durability of the weapon, he prepared everything else he needs for the hunt.

Geared up, he started walking towards the edge of the safe zone.
