Chapter 6 - We meet again 5

Asher scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "Um… how about you each just pay for your own ice cream? That way, nobody has to argue, and everyone wins?" His voice cracked slightly, betraying his attempt to sound calm.

The girls exchanged glances, their smirks widening into sly grins. It was obvious to them that Asher was intimidated, and they found his unease entertaining. But instead of laughing outright, they decided to play it cool.

Mia broke the silence, her tone light but laced with mock seriousness. "You know, Asher, that's not a bad idea. We've been bickering like this since we were kids."

Lexi chimed in, nodding. "Yeah, we're like sisters. It's just our thing. No need to look so nervous we weren't actually going to start a fight or anything."

Asher blinked, realizing they had caught on to his unease. He chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Alright, fair enough. I guess I owe you an apology for assuming."

The girls' faces softened, and Mia placed a hand over her heart dramatically. "No, we should be the ones apologizing. We were being childish. Right, Lexi?"

Lexi nodded, stepping forward with an apologetic smile. "Asher, we're sorry for causing a scene. You didn't deserve to get caught in the middle of our nonsense."

For a moment, Asher stared at the two of them, their sincere expressions mixed with lingering traces of their playful smirks. He couldn't help but smile back.

"Apology accepted," he said warmly, his voice steadier now.

The girls beamed at him, their smiles lighting up the room. They quickly settled the bill each paying for their own ice cream as Asher suggested before gathering their things to leave.

They stepped outside, Mia glanced back, giving Asher a cheeky wave. "Thanks for being the voice of reason, Asher. Don't let the cashier take all the credit for today."

Lexi followed her friend, but not before flashing Asher a small, genuine smile. "See you around, Asher."

Asher stood behind the counter, watching the two of them walk away. A faint smile lingered on his lips, though his heart was still racing from their antics.

"Those two," he muttered to himself, shaking his head. "They'll be the death of me someday."

Outside, Mia nudged Lexi with her elbow. "So, what do you think? Did we scare him off?"

Lexi chuckled, the corners of her mouth curling up mischievously. "Nah, Asher's tougher than he looks. But it was fun watching him squirm."

The girls burst into laughter, their carefree giggles echoing down the street as they moved on to their next adventure.

"So, Lexi, what's the plan now?" Mia asked, taking a small bite of her ice cream.

Lexi glanced at her watch before replying, "I think I'll wait for Mom to show up. She'll worry if I disappear without a word."

But just as she finished speaking, a voice called out from behind them.

"Lexi! Lexi, where have you been?"

Both girls turned, startled. To their surprise, it was Fiona, Lexi's mom, rushing toward them. Her face was a mix of relief and frustration, though her eyes softened the moment she reached Lexi.

"Lexi, I've been looking everywhere for you! I was starting to think something terrible had happened!" Fiona exclaimed, her words spilling out in a rush. Then she noticed Mia standing beside her daughter and smiled warmly.

"Oh, Mia, no wonder I couldn't find Lexi you two must have been together."

Mia smiled back politely. "Good morning, Mrs. Fiona."

"Good morning, Mia," Fiona replied, chuckling. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I'll leave you girls to your fun."

Mia shook her head quickly. "Oh no, Mrs. Fiona, you're not disturbing us at all. I was about to head home anyway."

Fiona raised an eyebrow, her playful smile widening. "Why don't you join us for a mother-daughter day, then? It'll be fun!"

Mia's eyes widened with excitement, and she clasped her hands together as if she couldn't believe her luck. "Really? I'd love to, Mrs. Fiona!"

"Then it's settled," Fiona said, a twinkle in her eye. "But, Mia, please call me Aunty Fiona it sounds much better, don't you think?"

Mia laughed, nodding eagerly. "Of course, Aunty Fiona!"

Fiona stretched out her arms, pulling both girls into a warm hug. "Alright, who's ready for some mother-daughter fun? If you are, come give me the biggest hug you've got!"

Lexi and Mia giggled as they wrapped their arms around Fiona. It felt like a small but meaningful moment of family togetherness.

They pulled apart, Mia looked at Fiona sheepishly. "Aunty Fiona, before we go, I'd like to call my parents and let them know I'll be with you."

"Of course, sweetheart," Fiona said, pulling her phone out of her bag and dialing Mia's mom. She handed the phone to Mia once it connected.

"Hello, Mom," Mia said, her voice a mix of excitement and nervousness.

"Mia! Where are you? Your dad and I have been looking for you, and the whole family is asking about you," her mom's worried voice came through the line.

"I'm sorry, Mom," Mia said quickly. "I'm with Aunty Fiona and Lexi. That's why I didn't come back earlier. You can head home without me."

Her mom's tone softened. "Oh, so you've found Lexi. That's good."

"Yes, Mom. I'm really happy to be with them. I wanted to ask for you and Dad permission to spend some time with them today."

There was a pause on the line. Mia's heart raced until her dad's voice cut in.

"Mia?"

"Yes, Dad?"

"You can spend time with Fiona and Lexi. Go have fun," he said with a reassuring tone.

Mia let out a squeal of joy, her excitement bubbling over. "Thank you, Daddy! This is why I love you and Mom so much!"

She ended the call, Fiona noticed the radiant expression on Mia's face. "Looks like someone got their wish," Fiona teased.

Mia nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! They said I could stay!"

"Wonderful!" Fiona said, clapping her hands. "Then let's not waste any time."

Before they could take a step, Mia's phone buzzed again. It was still connected to her parents' conversation. Mia hesitated and listened as her mom's voice spoke again.

"Dave, are you sure this is alright? What if your mother asks where Mia is? What will we say?"

"Zina, calm down," her father replied gently. "I'll handle it. Don't worry so much." He paused before raising his voice slightly. "Mia, are you still there?"

"Yes, Dad," she replied, her voice steady.

"Go and have fun. That's all that matters," he said firmly.

"Okay, Daddy," Mia said, her voice light and happy as the call ended.

Without warning, she spun around in glee, grabbing Lexi's hands and twirling her in a circle. "Lexi, my parents said yes! I get to spend the whole day with you and Aunty Fiona!"

Lexi laughed, though the spinning made her slightly dizzy. "That's great, Mia! But can we stop twirling now? I think I'm about to fall over!"

"Oops, sorry!" Mia said, steadying her friend just as Fiona called out to them.

"Alright, girls! Who's ready for some ice cream and a swim?" Fiona asked with an air of mischief.

Mia beamed. "Lexi, your mom is the coolest!"

Fiona laughed, leading the way as the trio set off for their adventure, the day brimming with promise and joy.

The main door of the swim shop swung open dramatically, as if choreographed for a movie scene. Fiona, Lexi, and Mia stepped in, their presence commanding attention. The trio moved in sync, exuding a subtle elegance as their eyes scanned the shop. A young woman with striking pink-rose hair approached them with a warm yet slightly nervous smile.

"Hello! Welcome to Shyly Swim Accessories," the woman greeted them, her voice as bright as her hair. "We offer a wide range of swimwear to suit all tastes. My name is Nana, and I'll be assisting you today."

Her introduction hung in the air for a moment. The room grew silent as the trio took her in. Nana fidgeted slightly under their gazes, unsure if she'd said something wrong. She quickly recovered with a professional smile.

"What can I help you with today?" Nana asked, her tone polite and accommodating.

Fiona stepped forward, her poise instantly reassuring. "We're looking for some swimming outfits, Nana."

"Of course," Nana replied with a nod, her confidence returning. "Please follow me."

Nana led the way, weaving through the shop's maze-like passages. The outside of the shop had seemed modest, but as they ventured further, the interior unfolded into a vast and luxurious space. The walls were lined with racks of swimwear in every color and design imaginable.

When they reached the main display room, Nana gestured toward it with a flourish. "Here we are. This section has our premium collection. Feel free to explore and try on anything you like. If you need assistance, I'll be just around the corner."

With that, she gave a slight bow and left them to browse.

Mia's eyes widened in amazement as she turned to Lexi. "Lexi, are you seeing this? It's like the entire universe's supply of swimsuits is here!"

Lexi chuckled, running her fingers across a rack of shimmering pieces. "It's impressive, that's for sure."

Just as Mia was about to respond, Fiona's voice interrupted them.

"Girls, how do I look?"

Mia and Lexi turned to find Fiona standing confidently near a mirror. The transformation was stunning. Fiona's hair, previously tied neatly in a bun, now cascaded in loose waves down her back, with soft curls framing her face. She wore a sleek black bralette-style swimsuit with a plunging V-neckline and delicate wrap-over detail. The matching high-waisted skirt had a layered, flared silhouette that combined elegance and modesty.
