Chapter 31 - A Spy Among Us

We, as War-Knights, have one goal. Protect our nation and its people from a potential threat that would end our prosperity and peace. Even though we are young, we work hard to protect children, elders, and adults. When we started, most of us felt like we were forced against our own will and that we were being used by our government. But as the threat of a future war lingers, and the deterioration of relations between multiple countries, the Japanese Self-Defense Force decided that we are an important factor in the events of a war. Only time will tell what happens…

Reiko laid in her bed at night, looking at the roof, the in the officer barracks. The barracks she was in were made for officers and higher level soldiers in the military base she worked at and featured personal rooms. She was tasked with leading the future War-Knights in their training and provide a good example for them. In terms of responsibility, ethics and discipline. Being young herself, she knew it was hard for them to be forced to become soldiers. They had dreams. But she knew that the protecting the wellbeing of Japan was more important.

"They must be broken from seeing those scenes at the Tokyo bombings. The crying and shock meant that it hurt them."

Reiko said as she talked to herself.

"I hope those scenes prepare them for what they are going up against and motivate them to fight to protect the people of our nation…"

Reiko turned to her side. She extended her hand and grabbed a picture frame in her desk. In the frame, a family could be seen. Reiko looked at the picture with nostalgia. Her eyes showed how much she missed whoever the people in the picture were.

"I'm going to come back. I'm going to train these kids to their max, and join all of you after. This is for the good of our people…"

As Reiko appreciated the picture, she heard something fall outside her room. It was loud, but it was close to her room, so she was the only one to loudly hear it. She put the picture frame back, and stood up. She was dressed in her pajamas, as she had already bathed and prepared to go to bed. Reiko, out of curiosity, opened her door quietly and peeked outside. She saw the shadow of a person walking around the hallway outside the barracks. It was odd, as all the War-Knight cadets should've been asleep, and most soldiers were at their posts.

"That's strange. No one should be here right now. I'll check it out."

Reiko thought to herself.

Reiko decided to quietly follow the shadow, which walked slowly through the dark hallway. Reiko stayed far back, as to not alert the shadowy figure. She knew she should've called backup, but it was too late for that now.

As Reiko followed the shadow, she heard some kind of metallic twisting in the direction of the shadow. The, the shadow disappeared, but Reiko could hear something moving. As the noise faded away, Reiko sneaked closer, revealing an opened vent duct. From this point forward, Reiko knew she was dealing with something serious. But her curiousness got the best of her, and she decided to follow the "intruder". She ducked down and started crawling inside the vent. She knew it was crazy, but she had to find out who it was.

As Reiko crawled, she could hear a voice getting louder and louder. It was a female voice. She decided to crawl further, and see who it was. She reached the place where the voice was coming from, and she saw another open vent duct. Reiko peaked a little and saw a small makeshift room. It had a computer, a whiteboard, walkie-talkies, and knives on the little desk in the room. Reiko was shocked to see such a room hidden in the military base, even though it was small. She started listening to the female voice inside, and realized that the language she was talking in was… a foreign language? Some kind of European language? Nevertheless, Reiko tried to look further, to get a glimpse of the girl who was sitting in the room. As she looked, the aluminum air duct she was standing in collapsed, making her fall inside the makeshift room. Reiko hit her head hard on the floor, knocking her unconscious. As her consciousness faded away, Reiko heard the female voice say something in a foreign language.

"Посмотрите, что у нас здесь"

"…......"

Reiko had been unconscious for a few minutes. She could feel the pain from hitting her head on the floor. As she tried to move, she realized she was completely bound. Not being able to move because of some kind of restrain in her hands. As she opened her eyes, she saw the figure of a female War-Knight cadet in her pajamas. She looked up to see the face of whom the girl was. When she saw the girl's face, it finally clicked. It was one of the cadets.

"Your… Kaide Miura? What are you doing here?!"

Reiko exclaimed at her confusion.

Kaide Miura, the star cadet who mastered everything she did. She was an expert with weapons, and was employed as a spy in Japan by Antonov forces. Her real name had yet to be exposed.

"Well Ms. Reiko, as you can see, I'm a spy. Isn't it obvious? I'm here to spy on the War-Knight program. You finally found me out, huh?"

Kaide said with a smug face.

"But… how did you hide your accent so well, and… how did you set this little room in here?"

Reiko asked as her nervousness started getting to her.

"Thats a secret, Ms. Reiko. But now that you have found out about me, I have to make you shut up somehow."

Kaide pulled a knife and put it towards Reiko's throat. Reiko, who had been training for situations like this, was still struggling in fear and shock, as she had not expected this to be happening. Especially in her own military base. Reiko closed her eyes and screeched as she thought she was going to die.

"Relax. I'm not going to kill you, Ms. Reiko. Yet. But I will give you a proposition. Stay quiet about all of this and you'll be fine. If you tell anyone, your entire family will die. They live in [ ___________ ], Saitama, right? That's your choice. Anyway, now that you know about me, you can tell me some classified information, right?"

Kaide pressed the knife towards Reiko to scare her.

"PLEASE DON'T HURT ME OR MY FAMILY! ILL DO ANYTHING."

Reiko had lost it and started bursting into tears. She knew that Kaide had the power to hurt her beloved family.

"I SWEAR I DON'T KNOW ANY CLASSIFIED INFORMATION! I'M NOT ALLOWED TO SINCE I'M JUST A TRAINING OFFICER!"

Reiko frantically pleaded with Kaide to not hurt her or her family, but she tried explaining that she didn't have any classified information. Reiko was telling the truth.

"Well then, that's a shame. I don't know if that's true, but it better be. I need to get some classified documents regarding the newest military technology that your army has. And I need it badly. So I require you to find it and give it to me. Or else…"

"I WILL! JUST LET MY FAMILY ALONE!"

Reiko had agreed to help Kaide get the classified documents, which were very important to the Japanese Self Defense Force. She knew it was wrong, but she feared losing her family if she did not comply. Reiko looked at the floor, closed her eyes and accepted that she had no choice. She had been defeated. And not even in war. Kaide laughed and said something in a foreign language…

"Хорошая девочка"
