Chapter 13
Home Again
When did I plan on going to find Eren? That depended on whether or not finding Eren would benefit me in some way. I had no way of knowing whether or not what he said was true, or if he had anything to do with Luck doing what he did. Heck, I still didn't understand why Luck did what he did. He said he did it for revenge against the Cannibal King but I didn't buy it.
I couldn't believe it. Untouchable or not, attacking the capital to get the attention of a guy who lives on the coast of the country was just stupid. Luck must've realized that before starting the invasion. But the fact of the matter is he did start the invasion, he almost killed Reiya and was defeated by the commander.
Luck is dead. Overthinking things won't change that.
His question still burned in my mind. I'd assumed that he delivered the letter without knowing who it was from, but that last question he asked before kicking it. That wasn't a type of question a person asks before dying. It's like he pulled one of those, "I left a pot of gold under the ...the.....ugh…" scenes.
I opened my eyes while thinking such things. A familiar ceiling greeted me with a welcoming atmosphere. The sound of chirping birds alerted me of the time, it was still early morning. My body was covered in blankets and bandages especially around my shoulder. It all came flooding back to me, most of it anyway. My mind reeled at the flashbacks.
It gave me a slight headache so I pried myself off the bed. My feet stung when I set foot on the floor. Turns out that they too were covered in bandages. I hadn't felt it at the time but my feet really were burned by Luck's spell. I almost died. Again.
Shake it off! These things happen.
They happen, but do they happen to the same person two days in a row? I honestly didn't know. But to convince myself that I wasn't a walking magnet for bad luck I assumed that they did. I got out of the bed letting the familiar set up of my old room wash over me. I knew instantly that I was in my old house again.
The tiny cottage located on the outskirts of the capital. It felt surreal. The last time I was here I stormed out of the place desperate to prove that I could survive on my own but now I was back, covered in bandages. It felt like fate was trying to tell me something.
I opened the door slightly. My ears caught wind of three female voices. One belonged to a none, the other belonged to a cannibal and one more belonging to a dark elf. In short they were the voices of my mom, my co-worker and my older sister. Of the three, it was Lucy who noticed me first.
She narrowed her eyes at first but her face beamed when she confirmed that she was really looking at me and not just a hallucination. I waved at her awkwardly.
"Morning sis."
"Eddy!!" she yelped, leaping directly at me.
I tried dodging her of course but nostalgia and common courtesy dictated otherwise. I took on Lucy's charge like a big boy. She tackled me like a ferocious bull, we both fell to the ground. Squishing commenced while we were on the floor, that is to say that Lucy squished my face with her own while we were laying on the floor.
Reiya looked over us with a pained expression.
"That looked painful."
Oh it was. In fact it still hurts.
Whatever progress I made towards a full recovery was instantly undone by Lucy's advances. Unable to watch anymore of our tomfoolery, our mother pulled Lucy off of me.
"That's enough. Let's not forget that he shouldn't even be awake right now." She proclaimed.
"Fine." Lucy said dejected.
As soon as Lucy got off, I was pulled up by my mother, who then proceeded to wrap her own arms around me. I was appalled at the hypocrisy of it all, to pry Lucy away just so she could do the exact same thing. I wanted to admonish her but her sobs made it nigh impossible. That's right, my mother was crying.
"Don't you ever worry me like that again!" she cried.
"S-sorry….."
She kept sobbing away with her hands clutched around me. I returned her embrace with my own. "I'm back home now." I declared.
She smiled in between cries at my declaration.
"Welcome home, Eden."
