Guilty!
The word echoed in her brain like a broken record in a bad dream. But she was wide awake and fully aware of what was happening around her.
"It is your fault." A familiar voice nagged at her. But she guessed that would be her conscience whispering eerily in her ears.
Venus assumed her guilt would not stop blaming her for what she had done as she watched her husband sleep restlessly, tossing and turning in the bed.
He was probably dreaming of the horrible things that could happen to their stepdaughter because of what she had done or her lack of action.
"I am a coward." That was how she would describe herself.
At that point, she knew she would never forgive herself if something happened to Eugene again. She barely got him back. She was afraid she might lose him again if he learned the truth.
