"We will," Roe says. "We're taking a long route, to make sure we're not being followed."
"When are you leaving?" Addie asks.
"Today, before the sun sets."
"Is there anything we can do for you?"
"No." Roe's expression is firm, unyielding. "I have come to thank you for your hospitality, and to express my condolences again for your loss. I only knew him for a short while, but Aleksander was a good man, and a good Alpha. It will be hard replacing him."
You keep your face a careful, neutral blank. Your pack hasn't talked about replacing the Alpha yet. You're not sure anyone is ready for that conversation... even though deep down you know it's going to have to happen soon.
"I have some things for your pack," Roe says. "Payment for allowing us to stay in your territory for so long."
"Payment?" Addie echoes uncertainly.
"It's weed," Shawnie calls from the back. "And some of Phil's home made cider. Plus a few toys for the kids. And some spare cash." You're surprised. The other things Roe's given you have been practical. Food, spare clothes... This feels closer to a gift.
"Why?" Sergi growls.
"Because I don't want this to be the end of the relationship between our packs," Roe says.
Get the bags," Roe orders their pack.
"Yes Alpha," they say in unison. You watch as they return to their bikes and begin pulling boxes and bags off the saddles. Shawnie's among them. She's not the only familiar face you see. Farro's towering presence is hard to miss.
