Ed turns to face you directly. "Blackwell? The vampire?"
"Yes. Did you kill him? On the bridge?"
"Was he the one who killed the Alpha?"
You swivel to stare at him, horror bubbling beneath your skin. "Yes. You know that."
He doesn't say anything.
"You know that," you say again. "I howled. You heard. Everyone heard. The pack was minutes away."
"Gideon Mercer... We only found the Alpha and the van."
You feel the blood drain from your face. "You let him get away?"
"We didn't find him. We smelt vampires, but the rain—-"
"You let him get away!"
"Get in the car," Vicky snaps. "Now is not the time."
You watch, dizzy with rage, as the pack haul Sergi into the back seat of the car. You grit your teeth and climb in afterwards, reaching out to loop the seatbelt around his prone shape. Ed climbs in on his other side.
And then you smell it. It's a soft scent... but clear in the crisp morning air. Magic.
