You're sitting in the back seat of Vicky's car, staring at your reflection in the window. You look tired. You feel tired. Every bone in your body is heavy, your skin numb, your eyes dry.
Your mind keeps circling over everything that's happened so far tonight.
The stray.
The chase.
You're not sure how you feel about it.
But, no matter what you or any of the others are feeling, the choice has been made.
The stray is gone.
You took her to the edge of town, showed her your teeth, and watched her stagger off into the gloom. She didn't follow the road like you'd expected. In fact, she didn't seem to register any landmark. She just stumbled away, small, sick, alone...
But alive.
Considering how things could have gone you count that as a win.
Marco is in the seat beside you. His eyes are closed, but you can tell he's awake. Probably thinking about this whole mess, just like you.
Vicky is driving. She doesn't say a word, as usual, but every so often you see her eyes in the rear-view mirror watching you.
Ed is in the front passenger seat, tapping furiously on his phone.
