Chereads / New Horizons: Dawn / Chapter 11 - Awakening of the Triad and First Mission

Chapter 11 - Awakening of the Triad and First Mission

In the cocoon of her softly-lit room, Dawn sat cross-legged on her plush, sapphire rug, surrounded by the muted hum of the underground facility. The walls, bathed in a gentle teal from the adjustable LED lights, seemed to pulse in sync with her deep, measured breaths. The rug and lights she had earnt through her hard work, and rewarded to her to decorate her room with.

She meticulously revisited the intricate facets of the mission, letting every detail wash over her. The PyraDroids with their scintillating red eyes, the grotesque, chitinous exterior of the mutated scorpions, each memory painted a vivid tableau in her mind. It was evident that while she'd mostly shadowed her more experienced sister, she hadn't returned empty-handed.

From the mechs, each distinct in their mechanical grotesqueness and predatory instinct, to the unpredictable behaviors of the mutants; every interaction, every nuance of the mission had etched a lesson in her psyche. The arid landscape, the sporadic sandstorms, and the blistering heat, each of these environmental challenges presented its own set of adversarial hurdles. Mere training couldn't fully prepare her for such unwieldy variables.

Deep in thought, an intrusive array of system alerts momentarily shattered her serenity.

Perplexed, Dawn squinted at the hovering, semi-transparent notifications, their digital glow illuminating her face. As the enormity of the implications dawned on her, she felt a thrum of exhilaration. This new capability to potentially integrate two of the remaining four classes was monumental. With the Mechanic and Mage classes beckoning her, she envisioned a future replete with possibilities.

A class ranking of SS was legendary. It made her potential both an allure and a danger. The echelons of rank normally capped at A for most players, making her newly acquired ranking all the more tantalizing and treacherous. As well as cementing her as an NPC to the system to be given something no player would.

With bated breath, Dawn activated the sleek Mechanic manual—a holographic tome with intricate silver circuit designs pulsing on its cover. As the system recognized her intent, a surge of adrenaline coursed through her. Once the Mechanic class was assimilated, she immediately delved into the Mage's world—a manual aglow with swirling arcane symbols that responded to her touch with soft, musical chimes.

The mental toll of dual-class assimilation was staggering. Her mind, now a confluence of gears, wires, spells, and ancient chants, throbbed with intensity.

The Mechanic blueprints—like the compact, sun-absorbing Solar Recharger or the nifty, agile Drone Scout—were promising first steps on a vast technological journey. Her Mage spells, from the scintillating Elemental Burst to the chilling touch of Cryogenic Snap, hinted at vast elemental domains awaiting mastery.

She checked the System over both of classes she had gained.

Looking at the first notification, it was the three basic abilities of a starter Mechanic. Quick Fix let her rapidly repair something a small amount. But repeated use without stopping to properly repair the item, would lead to it being destroyed.

Tech Affinity increased the stats of equipment she used, making them stronger.

And Overcharge damaged a piece of equipment to boost its abilities for a short time.

The three blueprints were random, but would at least prove some use, the system wouldn't give her a blueprint that was impossible to make, needing a material from another planet she couldn't reach.

Clearing the notification for gaining the Mechanic class, the one for Mage showed itself.

The basic skills for Mage, Arcane Intuition let her gain and sense Mana in her surroundings, Spell Weaving was what let her use her spells, and Mana Channeling would let her either use less or more Mana depending on how much Mana or damage she wanted to use and inflict.

Elemental Burst let her throw a bolt of Ice, Lightning or Fire. A good all around attack spell, letting her use different elements depending on the situation.

Cryogenic Snap would instantly freeze a small area or object, potentially immobilizing foes or creating icy barriers. A good utility spell, letting her slow opponents or be used as an attack and defense in different situations and uses.

Rust Touch would accelerate the oxidation process in metals, causing a thin layer of rust to form. In this low level form, it wasn't the most useful. However, there was one Mage player she remembered that dedicated to leveling it up, and became the bane of Mechanic players, able to damage and rust their creations rapidly and over a large distance.

Examining her Mechanic abilities, Dawn felt the tangible weight of the tools and gadgets she could now conjure. The intricacies of circuitry, the dance of electrons, and the rhythm of machines were now intimate to her.

Mage powers weren't just spells but an understanding of the universe's arcane pulse. She could feel the mana streams, the weave of spells, and the rhythm of incantations.

Both of these sensations flowed through Dawn, clearing up the world around her like never before. The feeling that she could see everything in a new and more advanced light compared to before.

Yet, with these newfound abilities came the looming shadow of the Venin Corporation. They were ever-watchful, and if they learned of her unique skills, she could become more than just an asset - a specimen. Determined to retain her agency, Dawn decided to project herself as a Mage, following in Twilight's revered footsteps while clandestinely nurturing her Mechanic prowess.

As Dawn continued to familiarize herself with the new skills and spells, an unexpected transmission interrupted her concentration. The symbol of Venin Corporation's upper echelons – a serpent coiling around a vial – illuminated her interface.

[Message from Venin High Command]

Dawn tapped the symbol, and the face of a stern-looking official materialized before her. She recognized him from the various briefings she had attended: Director Kane, one of the high-ranking Venin executives, known for his piercing gaze and taciturn demeanor.

"Dawn," he began, his voice brimming with cold authority, "given your recent accomplishments and... potential, you've been selected for an operation on the surface."

She listened intently, the weight of his words pressing on her.

"We're sending a team to retrieve a sample of the Flora Luxara, a rare bioluminescent plant that has potential applications for our research. While it's not a particularly dangerous mission, we believe it'll provide an opportunity for your skills to be tested alongside other recruits."

Dawn nodded. Her interface then showcased holograms of her future team members. There was Lyria, a graceful 19-year-old with a reputation as a sharpshooter; Gareth, 18, whose hulking frame hinted at a warrior class; Tessa, 18, known for her swift agility and tracking skills; and Caden, the eldest at 19, a budding alchemist with knowledge on various surface flora.

"Your team will rendezvous at Hangar Bay 7 tomorrow at 0600 hours," Director Kane continued. "You'll be briefed further there. Remember, Dawn, Venin Corporation expects success."

The transmission ended as abruptly as it began.

Dawn exhaled, realizing the gravity of this new mission. She was the youngest, and while her recent power-ups might have made her an asset, it also painted a target on her back. These older recruits had been training together for years, establishing rapport and trust. She was the outsider, and proving herself was paramount.

She began to strategize. Using her Mechanic skills, she could fashion traps and mechanisms to aid in the retrieval process. Her Mage powers would prove invaluable in countering any natural adversaries on the surface or warding off predators attracted by the plant's glow.

Before going to bed, Dawn opened the interface, looking at the pile of experience, she decided to put some experience into her Major class, and save some to gamble on spells. However, she found that her Major class encompassed all three of her classes, meaning she wouldn't be able to split experience between them, but equally. Making every level thrice as expensive, but bring thrice the rewards. On top of such, her overall level only went up alongside her Esper class, the Mage and Mechanic classes seemed to simply be expansions of it. Making leveling them up easier to deal with, but also meant she wouldn't be able to focus on the Mage class now, and the Mechanic class later. Using only half her abilities would limit her abilities, and slow down her advancements even further.

The spells she managed to pull were;

Arcane Insight: Temporarily boosts the caster's perception, revealing hidden traps, magic, or creatures.

Electrochain: Sends out a chain of lightning that can jump from one enemy to another.

Pyroclasm: Unleashes a wave of intense fire, scorching everything in its path.

Levitation: Grants the ability to float above the ground, evading ground-based threats.

And, Feather Float: Causes random feathers nearby to levitate for a short duration, creating a whimsical visual effect.

Some good spells, although also the bit more useless Feather Float spell. She also sank some experience into leveling up the spells she felt would be useful.

And with her playing around with her spells in her room, it was likely that Venin knew of her newly awakened arcane abilities.

The next day, as the team gathered, Dawn felt the weight of curious eyes on her. Their unspoken question was clear: Why was a 14-year-old amongst them? But, instead of retreating into a shell, she stepped forward, introducing herself confidently.

The vast hangar reverberated with the hum of energy and activity. In the middle of the commotion, a small cluster of individuals stood distinctly apart, their postures radiating a bond forged through shared experiences.

Lyria, with her observant eyes, was the first to spot Dawn as she approached. "You're the Dawn we've heard about?" she asked, an edge of suspicion evident in her tone. She had been told of a new member, but seeing the young girl before her was unexpected. The description she'd received was vague at best, simply detailing magic and combat proficiency.

Gareth, whose presence loomed large, looked Dawn up and down, clearly puzzled. "Venin said you're good with magic and weapons," he rumbled, disbelief evident. "But they forgot to mention you're just a kid."

Tessa, a subtle smile playing on her lips, twirled her staff idly. "They also said you're important to the higher-ups. Must be something special about you," she mused, a playful challenge in her eyes.

Caden, looking contemplative, uncorked a vial and gazed at its swirling contents. "All we got was a name and some skills. The mystery is... intriguing," he admitted, peering at Dawn over the rim.

Feeling the weight of their gazes, Dawn squared her shoulders. "I won't deny my age. But I promise, I bring more than just my youth to this mission." To emphasize, she activated her interface. Arcane symbols surrounded her and with a focused thought, she sent out a brief Electrochain, causing a few nearby devices to flicker momentarily. The ground beneath her feet subtly rose as she showcased her Levitation spell, floating a few inches off the ground.

Lyria raised an eyebrow, her previously dismissive stance shifting to one of reluctant interest. "Impressive," she murmured.

Gareth, although still wary, gave a nod of acknowledgement. "Age or not, skill is skill. But remember, out in the field, trust and teamwork matter."

Tessa grinned, "Well, I'm curious to see what the fuss is about. Hope you can keep up, kiddo."

Caden chuckled softly, "Every story has its wild cards. Welcome to ours, Dawn."

Feeling the tentative acceptance, Dawn nodded with determination. The journey ahead was uncertain, but she was ready to navigate its challenges and earn her place within this seasoned group.

The stark ambiance of the hangar stood in sharp contrast to the warmth that the briefing room promised. Its walls, adorned with rich, dark panels, seemed to absorb the gleaming reflections of the holographic map that sprang to life with a simple touch. The blue hues of the map illuminated the room, casting an otherworldly glow onto the concentrated faces of the team.

Lyria, her hair cascading like liquid silver, pointed delicately. "The Flora Luxara is located here," she noted, gesturing towards a luminescent spot within the Xylinth Forest. "Its glow will guide us under the cover of night. Yet, the forest is thick and treacherous. We must be vigilant."

Gareth, his arms crossed in a show of formidable strength, chimed in, "We'll touch down here," pointing to a clearing. "The objective is simple: retrieve the plant and get out. We'll avoid conflict whenever possible."

Tessa, with a flick of her nimble, color-streaked fingers, expanded the map's display. "There are CryoWolves and Skyter Bats in the area. Both are fiercely territorial. We might not be the only players on the field. Other factions could be hunting the Luxara."

Caden, his eyebrows knitted in thought, added, "Once plucked, the Luxara loses its glow rapidly. I've prepared a special container to preserve it, but we won't have much time."

Amidst the flood of information, Dawn interjected, keeping her tone balanced, "And what about the ambient magic of the forest? Could it interfere with our communications or other tools?"

Lyria looked at her, surprise evident for a fleeting moment. "You're perceptive. Yes, the forest pulses with ancient magic. It can disrupt modern tech."

Gareth, ever the protective guardian, cautioned, "We'll need to trust our gut as much as our gadgets. We stick together. Always."

Dawn nodded, taking a moment before suggesting, "Then we'll need to stay within hearing distance of one another if we don't want to end up lost and alone."

The meeting continued with the members laying down logistics and coordinating personal responsibilities. The ambient lighting in the room cast deep, contemplative shadows over their faces, a testament to the gravity of the mission. The Xylinth Forest, though teeming with beauty, was a labyrinth of danger and ancient mysteries.

Caden, rummaging through his satchel, presented a series of small metallic pins, each emitting a soft chime when agitated. "These are EchoPins. If we're separated, drop one, and its resonance will lead the others to its location. But use them sparingly; they're not impervious to the forest's magic, and their effectiveness diminishes with each use."

Dawn gingerly took one, feeling its cool weight in her palm. The EchoPin hummed with a comforting frequency, an assurance of a lifeline within the treacherous forest.

Tessa, her sharp eyes never missing a detail, added, "Remember, the forest isn't just a maze of trees and beasts. There are marshlands, quicksand, and thickets that can trap an unwary traveler. Our journey will be as much about wits as strength."

Gareth, taking a more pragmatic approach, spread out an array of weapons on a table. From daggers with serrated edges to short-burst energy rifles, the arsenal was diverse. "Each weapon is tailored for quick retrieval and utility. We aren't going to war, but the forest doesn't care about our mission. We must be prepared."

Dawn approached, her fingers grazing the weapons. Selecting a compact energy blade and a sleek hand-cannon, she felt their weight and balance. They felt familiar, an extension of her own abilities.

Lyria, having observed this, mused, "I've heard tales of your combat skills, Dawn. But in this mission, we're a unit. We defend each other, and no one fights alone."

Dawn looked up, meeting Lyria's gaze, "Understood. I'm not here to be a hero. I'm here to complete the mission and ensure we all get back safely."

The preparations carried on, each member engrossed in their tasks, their individual strengths merging into a unified force. The ambiance of anticipation was palpable, the quiet moments punctuated by the subtle clicks of equipment checks and the muted whispers of strategy discussions.

As the clock neared the hour of departure, the team formed a circle, hands joined. Gareth, voice deep and resonant, spoke, "We head into the unknown, but we do so together. For Venin, for the mission, but above all, for each other."

The sentiment echoed through the room, uniting their spirits. The mission was set, and the mysteries of the Xylinth Forest awaited.
