Chapter 5 - Feeling of fear

"Officer Hamilton, you called?" Elizabeth asked as soon as she got back to the station.

"Ah, yes. The cheif called for you." Officer Hamilton replied and gestured at the cheif's office.

Elizabeth nodded and skilfully placed the missing people's file under every other file on her desk.

She walked to the office and knocked a few times.

"Sir, it's Officer Brian."

"Yes, come in." Cheif Alejandro's voice sounded from the other side of the door.

Elizabeth pushed the door and went in.

This wasn't the first time she had entered his offices but for some reasons, his office now had a darker touch to it.

"Officer Brian?" Chief Alejandro called, cutting Elizabeth from of her train of thoughts.

"You called for me, Sir."

"Hmm." Cheif Alejandro nodded and said.

"You left the station before your shift was over, it was quite an unwise thing to have done.

"...I'm sorry, Sir. I have no excuse." Elizabeth looked down at her feet. The cheif's expression was unusual, his usual smile did not seem to reach his eyes and his words were sharp. Unexplainable insecurities quickly welled up in Elizabeth's heart.

"A file is missing from the files I asked you to sort out." Cheif Alejandro removed his glasses and rested his back on his the backrest of his seat.

"Oh that… I saw an unusual file on my desk, I had thought of giving it to you but I was caught up in some matters." Elizabeth lied through her teeth, trying to sound as convincing as possible.

"... I'll go get it now." Elizabeth added when Cheif Alejandro did not reply to her previous words. His eyes stared blankly, as if he had believed her lies and at the same time doubted them.

Elizabeth ignored his stare and walked out of the office, she immediately went back to her seat and hurriedly sat down.

"Ha!" She sighed deeply.

"...but as for now my main suspects are the current cheif of police, Cheif Alexandro and Richard Moore…"

Officer Louise' words came back to her mind.

Elizabeth shut her eyes tightly, she took a deep breath before carrying the file back to the cheif's office.

Elizabeth pushed open the door and walked over to his desk.

She feigned a smile and placed the file gently on his table.

She backed away immediately she kept it and said.

"I think that is the missing file, Sir."

"Hmm." Cheif Alejandro just nodded again.

Elizabeth pressed her lips into a thin line, she nodded slowly.

"I'll take my leave now." She turned around and headed to the door, she was about to turn the door knob when she was stopped by a voice.

"Officer Brian." Cheif Alejandro's voice was calm but the chill from it assaulted her ears.

Her heartbeats were rapid, but Elizabeth could not understand what exactly about him scared her.

It was not as if he could harm her anyways… or was Officer Louise' hypothesis right? Could he really harm her?

Elizabeth stopped in her tracks but did not turn around.

"I don't understand what kind of matters you were caught up in especially in a town with zero worries like Vandhill… Officer Brian, you are very likeable and I'll tell you one thing…it's not everything a child should seek, you know the saying, curiosity kills a cat."

Elizabeth shuddered with every word he spoke.

She forced a smile and turned around.

"I don't understand what you mean by that, Cheif. But I'll keep it in mind."

Immediately Elizabeth said those words she left the office without waiting for a reply.

She walked as fast as she could without stopping for a moment until she reached the restroom.

She slumped on the tiled floor and leaned on the wall, she placed her hand on her chest to still her pacing heart.

Elizabeth took multiple deep breath, she had only experienced this feeling once in her life and experiencing it again made her stomach churn.

Her mind went back to the eyes she saw when she turned around.

Those sinister eyes and his smile which looked even more sinister.

"Ha, a scared police. How pathetic." Elizabeth scolded herself and chuckled lightly.

She had succeeded in calming herself down, this ordeal made her want to get to the root of this matter even faster.

Elizabeth took out her phone from her pocket and dialled a number.

"Officer Louis, let's meet at your house. Don't worry I'll be coming over today before midnight."

It was decided, the hunt would go on….
