AN: Hello there!
This feels a bit awkward… It's been a year since the last update, so sorry for that. Between new games, anime, movies, work, and my social life, I kind of forgot to write. Yeah, I know, that's a lame excuse.
Anyway, before we get into the chapter, I'll answer a few reviews:
The first chapter was hard to read—messy and all over the place.
Yeah, I get that. It's my very first chapter, and I wrote it after binge-watching Gintama, probably drinking too much caffeine. And no, I don't have ADHD. I admit it's over the top and focuses too much on the three girls—MJ, Felicia, and Gwen—but I picked them because the story starts in a high school setting. It was meant to introduce Marvel characters, build the world, and set up the main character's background. As for them being the same age? Well, why not? This isn't the Spider-Verse, but the Marvel-Verse. I'm mostly using the movies as a base. And no, I'm not getting rid of Peter—he's still around. Despite how messy the first chapter is, I think I'll keep it that way for now. Maybe I'll fix it later. Still, I appreciate you reading past it and even caring enough to comment—thanks again!
Saga is a weird name?
Yeah, I'm not great with names, but I promise it has meaning for the main character.
The main character is a simp?
Yep, totally! He's going to get even more "simp-ish" or "simper" as the chapters go on (is simper even a word?). Most main characters in isekai fanfics are simps, so why should mine be different? Should I make him an edgy, brooding character? Or someone who curses constantly like he doesn't know any other words? (Not that I'm against swearing—there's going to be a lot of it in this fic. It's M-rated for that reason.) Or a character who suddenly turns into a cold-blooded killer or rapist for no reason, even though he was just a normal guy before getting isekai'd?
If that's what you want, this story might not be for you. Thanks for reading anyway! In case it wasn't clear, this story is about an ordinary guy who gets isekai'd, meets characters he's a fan of, and reacts like I think someone would in his situation—while knowing a lot of meta stuff. Even with that knowledge, he's not a master strategist like Lelouch, planning every move with perfect precision. No way. No matter how much you love Marvel or any other world, you're going to forget parts of the plot and characters. Things will change, at least in my opinion.
I'm rambling now, but my point is, my main character won't have all the answers or see the obvious things right away. But like every main character in fanfiction, he'll have plot armor and power-ups early on. (Oops, spoiler!)
He Doesn't act like an adult?
From many media that I watched/read many mc adult that somehow turn in their younger body or reborn again as an infant theoretically will have complex psychological effects due to the interplay between their adult mind and the hormonal environment of an infant/teenager.
The adult would retain their mature mental faculties—experience, decision-making, and emotional control. However, the younger brain is still developing. There is part of the brain is responsible for impulse control, planning, and emotional regulation, it will affecting in how they process emotions or make decisions, even if they have years of life experience.
There is also Hormonal Influence, which directly affects mood, energy levels, and even behavior. Even though this adult person has experienced these changes before, the surge of teenage hormones could trigger mood swings, heightened emotional reactions, and increased impulsivity.
They might still retain some adult reasoning but find themselves drawn to more impulsive, thrill-seeking, or emotionally charged behaviors due to the hormonal influence. Moreover, teens tend to experience heightened risk-taking behavior, driven by dopamine-related changes in the brain's reward system, potentially affecting the adult's behavior. even if they intellectually know better.
Powers, system, A.D.A, etc.?
I won't go into too much detail here, but my MC won't be a power hoarder. The system will also be kept simple because I don't like reading gamer fics where most of the story is just walls of text about stats and skills.
To all the readers who have followed, favorited, and reviewed this story: I truly appreciate your support. Please note that updates may be sporadic because of my busy day job, but I'll continue the story as often as I can. Now, let's get into the next chapter!
Chapter 7 – I need A Hero…
17:45, 16 October 2008
Saga sprinted, his breath heavy, skillfully maneuvering around the swiftly approaching rocks. His heart raced as he desperately evaded the incoming rocks, Using Infusion skill, his infused legs propelling him with astounding speed. With each nimble leap, he narrowly avoided the imminent danger that threatened to hit him.
A startled cry escaped Saga's lips as he instinctively ducked under a lightning-fast jab aimed his way. Soon, he found himself bobbing and weaving to evade a relentless barrage of punches from Master Drumm.
Master Drumm's relentless assault intensified, his powerful punches becoming a blur of motion. Saga's agile movements was still allowed him to dodge and weave, his survival instincts kicking in.
Drumm shifted his stance, advancing with calculated steps. As Drumm closed in, his eyes narrowed with determination, with a sudden burst of speed, he redirected his attack. channelling his magic into his foot. The resulting boost of power propelled him forward, launching a devastating roundhouse kick directly into Saga's solar plexus. The impact sent Saga hurtling through the air, crashing into the concrete wall of a nearby building, leaving behind a shattered silhouette.
Despite the pain coursing through his body, Saga refused to stay down. Fuelled by sheer stubbornness, he struggled to his feet, readying himself for the next onslaught from the inhumanly fast Drumm. With precision and agility, Saga managed to dodge yet another punch thrown at him, maintaining a safe distance from his formidable opponent.
As Saga and Drumm engaged in a fierce battle, Saga's thoughts raced through his mind. Adrenaline pumping through his veins, and react swiftly to gain the upper hand. With determination in his eyes, he prepared himself for the relentless assault that awaited him.
"Concentrate, read my movement and react!" Drumm said while closing in on Saga, he continues his relentless assault
"What do you think I'm trying to do?!" Saga couldn't help but retort back in indignation when Daniel questioned his intentions. He knew he was doing everything he could to stay focused during this intense encounter.
Taking in his surroundings, Saga noticed the destruction wrought by Drumm's powerful blows. The building's wall had been obliterated, leaving a gaping hole. thank god it is in the mirror dimension otherwise police will come and arrest them from all of this destruction around him.
Saga grunted and slid back. The pain pulsated through Saga's body, but he had no time to register the pain nor contemplate his life choices. Drumm closed in once again, He was pushed onto the defensive again, blocking and dodging Drumm powerful punches with all his might. Yet Drumm switched things up, catching Saga off guard as he performing a clean spin kick straight towards his head. Saga's instincts kicked in, allowing him to catch Drumm's ankle and hold him in place.
With sweat dripping down his chin, Saga tightened his grip on Drumm's ankle and tugging. while his leg is trying to sweep Drumm left kick in quick movement.
However, Drumm prove himself as master combatant, years of experience show itself that he was ready for that, with quick movement he effortlessly spinning himself and countering with a powerful heel kick that sent Saga flying onto the road.
Saga did not stay long on the ground Ignoring the pain, Saga quickly get up to regained his footing as he evade stomp from master Drumm, which is good idea as the ground is cracked from the force of his leg.
Drawing upon his Dragon Core, Saga spun around and unleashed a Mana Bolt towards Drumm. The energy collided with Drumm's hastily conjured shield across the road, letting out a sigh of relief as he was given a moment of reprieve.
"I'm not done yet!" Drumm's defiant words echoed in Saga's ears, reminding him that the battle was far from over.
With a mixture of surprise and determination, Saga watched as Drumm emerged from a portal above him. Swiftly, Saga utilized 'Augmentation', channelling energy into his legs to enhance his agility and dodge Drumm's incoming fist from above.
Seizing the opportunity, Saga quickly utilize Shundō -fast movement technique to launch himself towards Drumm like a speeding missile driving his fist into Drumm's stomach. The impact caused Drumm to gag and go flying, but Saga was relentless, giving chase with a manic grin on his face.
Manipulating his energy, Saga took a great leap, rolling in the air, a surge of power erupting from his shoulders, propelling him towards Drumm in a flying kick.
"RIDER KICK!" Saga shouted out his move. Under normal circumstances, he wouldn't resort to such a Chuuni-esque declaration, but after enduring weeks of relentless beatings and countless bone-crushing trials literally, he seized this opportunity with gleeful determination to strike back at Drumm.
Drumm swiftly conjured a shield to dampen the impact of the 'Rider Kick' Though he was still sent flying, he exhibited the resilience befitting a master of mystic arts. Employing a spell to quell his momentum, he managed to mitigate the damage.
"Tch," Saga grumbled, spitting to the side.
"Apprentice, were you trying to kill me with that kick?" Drumm asked, his demeanor stoic though his bewilderment was apparent.
"I don't want to hear that from you!" Saga roared, a mixture of rage and annoyance fuelling his continued assault on Drumm.
Saga deftly maneuvered around Drumm's fists and retaliated with a powerful punch. Drumm grunted from the impact, and Saga pressed on, delivering a crushing blow to Drumm's jaw before following up with a spinning kick aimed at his chest. Drumm raised his arm to block the second strike, a smirk playing on his lips as he attempted to twist Saga's leg. However, Saga mirrored Drumm 's previous move, jumping with his other leg to deliver a kick that forced Drumm to release him.
Both combatants regained their balance, launching simultaneous attacks that resulted in their fists colliding with tremendous force. They engaged in a fierce struggle, each vying for the upper hand.
"Good! You're improving quickly," Drumm acknowledged.
Saga grunted, clearly exerting himself against Daniel's strength. "T-Thanks..."
"But it still isn't enough to beat me!... By the Flames of the Faltine!"
With a burst of roaring flames, Drumm unleashed his magic. As the fire surged toward him, Saga used Shundō again to dodge, but Drumm had anticipated this move.
He forcefully drove Saga back, delivering lightning-fast strikes to his stomach, culminating in a devastating uppercut that snapped Saga's head upward. Seizing the advantage, Drumm swept Saga off his feet, seized his arm, and slammed him into the ground.
Daniel seized the moment, aiming a punch directly at Saga's face. However, just before his fist could make contact...
"Stop!" A calm voice resonated, its timbre gentle yet commanding, evoking respect and obedience in those who heard it.
As the command hung in the air, both combatants froze, their movements arrested by the authoritative voice. Drumm's fist hung mere inches from Saga's face, tension radiating from his poised stance. Saga, too, halted mid-motion, muscles coiled with anticipation.
The source of the voice materialized from the shadows, revealing a figure cloaked in an aura of wisdom and power. It was The Ancient One, the Grand master of their mystical order. Her presence commanded reverence, her eyes sharp but filled with a knowing serenity.
"Enough," she intoned, her voice carrying a weight that resonated deep within them. "Master Drumm thank you for instructing our apprentice."
Drumm with respect bowing his head switching from combat mode to normal with ease.
With a subtle gesture, The Ancient One beckoned Saga in front of her. "You are formidable apprentices, but you must learn that true mastery lies not in dominance, but in unity."
'What does that even mean?' as usual he couldn't help but retort back in his head.
In the depths of his mind, Saga's thoughts raced, consumed by a whirlwind of questions. In a rebellious gesture, he pondered the meaning behind The Ancient One's enigmatic words.
With her voice flowing like a soothing river of wisdom, The Ancient One continued to impart her teachings on unity. "Unity," she explained, "is the pursuit of harmony within oneself and with those around you. It is the merging of strengths and the acceptance of weaknesses. It is in this unity that true power is born."
Saga's eyes locked with The Ancient One's, and He just tilting his head in confusion as what Master TAO said just know is making him more confuse.
Master TAO, her expression serene, seemed to find amusement in Saga's blank look. Her eyes twinkled with a mischievous glint.
Meanwhile, in the background, Master Drumm facepalmed, his palm meeting his forehead with a gentle thud. It was a gesture he'd perfected over the years, a silent gesture on the eccentric nature of his revered master's teachings.
"Ah, Mr Springfield," Master TAO mused, her voice dancing with a touch of mischief. "You see, unity is like a pot of soup. Each ingredient has its own flavor, its own texture. Alone, they are merely ingredients, but together, they create a symphony of taste."
Saga blinked, trying to wrap his mind around the culinary metaphor. He couldn't help but steal a glance at Master Daniel, whose face remained hidden behind his palm. 'Was it possible to facepalm harder?' Saga wondered.
The Ancient One's metaphor continued to flow, weaving a tapestry of insights through the language of simmering pots and blended flavors. With each word, different concept of unity began to take a more tangible form in Saga's mind.
As the lesson drew to a close, a spark of understanding flickered in Saga's eyes. He knows how to cook an oriental soup in many variety ways.
"So, do you understand?" Master TAO asked patiently.
"Honestly, most of that went over my head," Saga laughed, scratching the back of his head. "All I really got from it is how to make soup..."
He paused for a moment, then added, "Well, I guess I should practice making that soup first. But now it's just making me hungry." He tapped his chin thoughtfully.
Both master TAO and Saga laughing while Master Drumm just sigh exasperatedly
Master TAO nodded, her eyes twinkling with satisfaction. "Well, you are learning more by doing."
"Come then" Master TAO beckon Saga to take a stances
As the sun dipped beneath the horizon, casting elongated shadows across the training grounds, The Ancient One guided Saga through a series of exercises emphasizing cooperation over competition. Every movement, every breath transformed into a synchronization dance, flowing seamlessly.
At this point, Saga was just doing the motions as he hadn't grasped the concept yet.
Master TAO also pointed out his mistakes from the earlier fight with Master Drumm, explaining the wasted movements and what he could have done better.
A few hours later, Master TAO told him that his mystic arts training would begin tomorrow and sent him to rest.
POV Change
"So, what do you think?" Master TAO asked Master Drumm
"He's very raw, but he certainly not a prodigy" Master Drumm replied. Although he'd grown to respect Saga, he was always honest in his opinions.
"Ohh…?" Master TAO raised her eyebrow slightly, question unspoken a gesture for her Apprentice to elaborate.
"While his Control over his energy Developing very fast almost to frightening degree, his fighting prowess fall short, he lacks certain flair a prodigy in fighting should have…."
Master TAO keeps her silence as she was sure that her apprentice still has more to say, as he is one of the battle Master in Kamar Taj with very Few could match his skill in martial prowess and battle magic.
"However what truly frightening about him is his ruthlessness…." He Paused "He's still holding back, but in the spars we've had, he always unconsciously aims for fatal spots—throat, eyes, knees—before hesitating and changing his attack to subdue instead. If he stopped holding back, combined with his strength, his attacks would be deadly."
"And yet you say he's not a prodigy?" Master TAO asked, amused.
"Yes... he lacks variety and creativity in using techniques during a fight. Most of the time, he just relies on brute strength to get through challenges. Against an untrained civilian or someone physically weaker, he'll win. But if he faces someone of equal strength who knows how to use proper technique, there's a 60% chance he'll lose in hand-to-hand combat. To prepare him for what's to come, he'll need both time and experience to fully absorb our kata training until it becomes second nature, Not counting his mystic arts training... he will need a few years, a decade perhaps…" Master Drumm tell his evaluation based on his observation of Saga.
"For what's to come?" she asked, her tone as if she didn't know what he meant.
"Master, are we not train him for 'that' problem?" Master Drumm was confused, thinking Saga's training was meant for a specific threat that currently looming on their world.
"I have never said that, as for 'that' we will do as we always will as protector of this world" she answers calmly to master Drumm query.
"But Master..." Master Drumm started to protest, before Master TAO raised her hand calmly prevent him from voicing his objection.
She smiled softly at her apprentice "When I told Mr. Springfield that there were no string attached for his training... I truly meant it…. Despite his shortcoming he is a gifted student… I want to see he blooms, reaches his potential, make his mark unto this world"
The room filled with a heavy silence. Drumm, his mind made up, asked, "What if we fail?" His voice carried the weight of the question, fully aware of the challenge that lay ahead.
Master TAO walked to the large window in the New York sanctum, designed with the Kamar Taj emblem. She gazed at the moon. "Then that in itself is fate…"
21:45, 16 October 2008
Saga strolled through the bustling city streets, hands tucked into his jacket pockets, a perpetual look of frown etched on his face. The moon had ascended above, and New York lived up to its name as the city that never sleeps, bustling with activity even at this late hour. His thoughts were a chaotic mess, much like the city around him. A few weeks had passed since he accepted Master TAO's offer. Despite having a gamer system cheat, his progress was disappointingly slow. While he knew he had time before things became truly chaotic, he couldn't help but lament.
"A.D.A?" Saga mumbled in his mind.
[Yes, Boss?]
"Bring up my status, please."
DCU: 372/372 (regenerate 2.26 units per 5 minutes)
STR: 66
SPD: 68
CON: 75
MAG: 89
SPR: 84
Stat points: 10
"Hah…" Saga sighed as he reviewed his stats. Even after weeks of training, this was all he had achieved. Physically, he was as strong as an athlete, but in this world, he was still nothing more than fodder.
[Don't be discouraged, Boss. This is just the beginning; it hasn't even started yet.] A.D.A, whose speech pattern improved day by day, tried to encourage him.
'I know, A.D.A. Maybe I'm just tired,' Saga said in his mind. He had been training nonstop, pushing his mediocre regeneration to the limit. Using all his metaverse knowledge, compared to a normal person, his development was outstanding. However, he couldn't help but compare himself to all the Isekai main protagonists in his previous world. The novelty of being isekai to Marvel had already faded; all that was left was a harsh reality check.
His previous sparring sessions had revealed that he still had a long way to go. Even now, he hadn't managed to secure a victory in a spar against Master Drumm. The Doctor Strange movie seemed to nerf sorcerers significantly. Based on his observations, the most advanced sorcerers could fight with inhuman prowess. Their reinforcement techniques allowed them to harden their flesh beyond steel, and some spells could even transform their skin into diamond.
They could also augment themselves to achieve incredible speed, leaping over 100 meters into the air. Combined with their combat spells, they evolved into a formidable force capable of dismantling even the most highly trained armies in the Universe.
As of right now, he hadn't even begun to delve into the realm of mystic arts; his primary focus remained on further developing his energy. According to his hypothesis and Master TAO's keen observations, his Dragon Core generated an energy amalgamation of Magic and KI. Theoretically, this unique energy could be utilized for both spellcasting and KI techniques.
However Master TAO is also note that based on her observations, there is a difference from the properties of Qi practiced by Kun'Lun and his KI. so not all Qi technique can be used using DC energy. While he hasn't tried it yet the same goes for spells in Kamar Taj.
During his experiments, Saga gained a variety of skills by attempting to replicate known abilities from the anime metaverse. For instance, he mastered wall and water walking from Naruto, significantly improving his skill and energy control. Another technique he developed was called "Shundo" or instant movement, inspired by movement techniques from the shonen manga holy trinity (One Piece, Bleach, Naruto). While not as powerful, it also differed in concept.
Saga's Shundo had a simpler application. By concentrating ki or mana into his feet, he could cover a limited distance in a burst of extreme speed, almost appearing instantaneous. However, this technique placed a substantial strain on his stamina and leg muscles. In the early stages of training, he tore numerous leg muscles, but he persevered. Now, his body could withstand 10 consecutive Shundo movements. Despite its effectiveness, Shundo techniques were energy-draining, consuming 10 DCU/meter for each movement.
"Just another day in the office I guess". Then, like an unexpected twist in a poorly written script, a scream shattered the bustling night. Zeroing toward the said scream he observed that most people doesn't seem to care, as if it was nothing to be concerned over. Then he realized that in this bustling night it's him that was weird to be able to hear that scream as it was quite far away not to mention it was muted by people walking and cars moving around.
"Can't a guy walk home in peace?" Saga grumbled, annoyance etched on his face.
'A.D.A!' Saga's tone was commanding and stern, giving orders to his AI assistant.
[Roger, triangulating Source…. Stand By!]
Saga's eyes darted toward his H.U.D maps as A.D.A worked to pinpoint the source of the scream.
[Northwest from here, distance 45 meters, back alley behind the drugstore.] A.D.A provided precise coordinates.
Without hesitation, Saga took off in the direction indicated. It was unusual for him to play the hero; normally, he would rely on the authorities or call for help from the crowd. But tonight, was different.
Guided by the maps, he navigated through the darkened alleyways until he stumbled upon MJ facing off against two thugs amidst the flickering neon lights.
"Well, well, well. What do we have here? Lost your way here, babe, or you just want to be with me?" leered the burly thug with questionable fashion sense.
"Get back, you creep!" MJ screamed, fiery temper in full force as she swung her bag toward the thugs. However, the swing was wide, and the thug easily dodged it, snatching her bag and tossing it aside.
The second thug, with crooked teeth, inched closer, brandishing a knife. "Now… now, no need to be scared. We just want to give you a good time," he sneered.
The burly thug took advantage of the chaos, grabbing MJ's hands. But MJ, not one to wait, unleashed a kick that left him gasping for air, followed by a bag-swinging spectacle that would make a martial artist jealous.
"You bitch!" roared the knife-wielding thug as he watched his friend struggle on the ground clutching thug junior.
"I was gonna make sweet love to you, but if it's rough play you want, then it's fine with me," he declared, preparing to stab the knife toward MJ. However, MJ defended herself using her bag, twisting the thug's arm before using a thick book to disorient him.
In that moment, MJ tried to run, but the burly man had regained his strength and grabbed her leg, causing her to fall. MJ fought back—kicking, punching, scratching—but the burly man was determined, ignoring the pain. His disoriented friend snapped out of it, joining in to help the burly thug. The odds were stacking against MJ.
The burly thug was trying to say something but only a soundless scream escaped his agonized mouth. His face contorted in pure agony.
Ignoring the unwritten rules of man, Saga unleashed a kick with all his might toward a location no decent man should do to his fellow, breaking the cardinal rule and sending the burly man into a silent abyss of pain.
His friend, not realizing the dire situation, turned just in time for Saga's foot to connect with his face. A resounding crack filled the alley as the force of Saga's kick rendered the thug unconscious.
"Huh?... Wha?" MJ blinked, utterly confused as she witnessed her two attackers crumpled on the ground.
Saga, not inclined to linger any longer, swiftly gathered her belongings scattered on the pavement. With a deft motion, he helped her back on her feet, and without a word, they both made a hasty escape from the scene.
After a couple of minutes of running away from the scene, the duo came to a stop. MJ, still catching her breath, was out of adrenaline from the earlier chaos.
"Hey, fancy meeting you here," Saga quipped, breaking the post-incident tension.
"Saga…?" MJ gasped, eyes wide, as if in disbelief that he was here.
"In the flesh," Saga replied with a wry grin.
A mix of emotions flashed across MJ's face before she settled into relief. The tension left her body, and she sat down on the ground, exhausted. Saga quickly knelt down beside her, checking if she was okay.
"Is the night always this exciting for you?" Saga joked, trying to lighten the mood.
MJ calmed down and gave him a weak smile, though it wasn't clear if she got his humor or not. "Hehe... this is just a regular Tuesday night for me," she replied, still trying to pull herself together after what had happened.
"Are you sure you're okay now?" Saga asked, his voice soft with concern.
"Yeah... I'm fine. Thanks for the help, tiger… that was… intense," she said with a small smile.
"Eh, I was just in the neighborhood," Saga shrugged it off casually.
"My hero..." MJ teased, giggling to ease the tension of the moment.
"Can you move? We need to get out of here, just in case those two guys try to come after us again," Saga said seriously. In a world like this, anything was possible.
"Yeah, let's go," MJ said, but when she tried to stand up, her legs gave out, and she ended up back on the ground.
"Huh...?" MJ looked confused and tried again, but the same thing happened. "I don't think I can stand yet," she chuckled nervously, trying to stay strong, but Saga could see she was shaking. The whole ordeal must have really scared her. He couldn't imagine how terrifying it must have been.
"Alright then..." Saga crouched down in front of her, clearly offering a piggyback ride. When MJ realized what he was doing, she blushed and her mind wandered to awkward thoughts. "What? No, no, no, I'll be fine in a minute, really," she stammered.
"Look, like I said, we need to leave fast. So here are your two choices," Saga said, turning his head to look at her behind him. "Piggyback ride or fireman's carry? Your call." His face was completely serious.
In her embarrassment, MJ blurted out, "Why not a princess carry?" Saga gave her a flat, deadpan look. Even in a situation like this, she had something to say.
"You really want me to carry you like that?" Saga asked, his voice toneless, his expression blank.
MJ's embarrassment deepened when she realized what she had just suggested. "Well, it's just... you know... it's the most efficient," she mumbled, avoiding his eyes.
Saga raised an eyebrow, a faint smirk breaking through his serious face. "Efficient, huh? Alright, Princess." Without giving her time to protest, he scooped her up in a princess carry, surprising her with how easily he did it.
As they moved, MJ felt both embarrassed and oddly comfortable. "You know, you're not as heavy as you look," Saga commented, his usual sarcasm slipping in.
MJ rolled her eyes, trying to hold onto some dignity despite the awkwardness. "Gee, thanks for the compliment."
They walked through the dimly lit streets, with Saga carrying MJ like it was nothing. He stayed silent, sensing that MJ needed some time to recover.
After a while, MJ broke the silence. "You're not going to let me forget this, are you?"
"Forget what? The princess carry?" Saga chuckled. "Don't worry, your secret's safe with me."
The cool night air breezed through the city, a calming contrast to the chaos they had escaped.
As they walked a few blocks, some people on the street noticed them. Some were confused, others offered congratulations or teasing comments, making MJ feel even more embarrassed.
"You know, I've changed my mind. How about a piggyback ride instead?" MJ suggested. She could handle the attention, but it was starting to feel a bit embarrassing.
Saga stopped, looking at her with a mix of surprise and amusement. "A piggyback, huh?" he said, gently setting her down. "Sure..."
With a quick hop, MJ jumped onto Saga's back, laughing like a child. "Much better," she said, tightening her grip on his shoulders.
"Ooh, definitely, it's really soft," Saga teased, feeling the sizeable asset pressing against his back, earning a playful swat on the head from MJ. She blushed furiously, rosy tint on her cheeks.
"Seriously? I just escaped from being harassed, only for my hero to harass me?" she joked.
"Aren't damsels usually giving the hero rewards?" Saga said nonchalantly, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Where in the world would you find the word 'hero' and 'pervert' goes hand in hand,'" MJ rolled her eyes.
Many mainstream media come to his mind about that but he holds his mouth as it will be best to just ignored her
"By the way, where are we going? This isn't the way to my place" trying to changed the subject lest her temper flared out as she didn't really like being ignored.
Raising an eyebrow and looked at MJ with incredulous expression "You actually expect me to carry you... all the way to Queens?... On Foot?... Really?"
"Well, I—"
"We're going to my place first, borrow Aunt Cass's truck, and then I'll take you home."
As MJ keeps on slipping in Saga's back he fixes MJ position so he could hold her better, accidentally grabbed her bottom earning him a sensual yelping from MJ.
MJ was embarrassed with a very red face, she swats his head to give him a little payback.
"You perv, you did that on purpose!"
"Huh,… did what?" Saga asked innocently, as he really just trying to get a better position
"You know what…" MJ said pointedly at Saga.
"What? I was just trying to stop you from slipping!" Saga protested.
"...….."
"Uh-huh, sure. Let me help you with that."
MJ was a bit annoyed with Saga because his hands were resting comfortably on her bottom. Feeling a mix of irritation and amusement, she lean in closer to his back and wrapped her arms around his neck and began to give him a playful chokehold.
"Uh, MJ? Can you loosen up a bit?" Saga asked, starting to feel a little uncomfortable. But MJ just ignored him.
"H-hey, MJ? Hello?" he said as the grip got tighter and tighter.
"MJ... I can't... breathe," Saga said, tapping on her arm in a panic feeling heaven and hell at the same time. With his strength, it would have been easy for him to break her hold, but she was his friend, and he didn't want to hurt her. He had been raised better than that.
Finally, MJ loosened her grip. "Hmmph," she mumbled, turning away from him. "Serves you right," she added under her breath.
Saga sighed. "You know, you're kind of scary," he said, shaking his head.
"And you're kind of a perv, you know that, right?" MJ shot back with a grin, quickly countering his comment.
They kept joking with each other as the city sounds filled the air around them. The earlier tension seemed to fade away as the night went on. Saga noticed that MJ's trembling had stopped, and when she laughed, it felt more real than before.
21:20, 23 October 2008
Saga never expected he'd be galivanting at night, perched on the edge of a building, looking down over New York's streets. He focused in on a red-haired girl below—his friend, MJ.
After last week's incident, he took it upon himself to watch over her for extra safety. He'd offered to take her home the next day, but she'd refused, saying it was just a random event. Besides, Felicia had insisted on taking MJ home after she found out, and although Saga didn't feel the best about Felicia, he knew she truly cared about MJ.
The whole situation caused quite a stir. Aunt Cass had been really worried and filed a report at the police station, where Mr. Stacy, Gwen's dad, helped submit it. Gwen had mentioned the incident to her dad, and since he'd known MJ since middle school, he stepped in to help. Thanks to Mr. Stacy, the two thugs from the incident were arrested the next day at the hospital. Both had pretty severe injuries—one with a broken jaw, the other with a serious busted balls.
Oddly enough, those guys had the audacity to threaten to sue MJ for their injuries, which shocked Saga. Apparently, in the U.S., criminals can sometimes countersue their victims, and the system even provides them with state-funded legal advisors. It felt so wrong to him—how could criminals try to turn the tables on their victims like that?
However, that idea was quickly crushed when Lydia Chen, Felicia's mom, confronted them like an unstoppable force. Lydia, a Chinese-American woman who looked barely over twenty, arrived looking fierce in a perfectly tailored gray suit, her hair neatly up, and wearing glasses that added to her striking beauty. Known for her reputation in the corporate world, Lydia had a knack for handling serious cases—often defending challenging clients I.e Criminal- without hesitation and win by the way. Her presence alone was enough to make anyone think twice about challenging her. Rumor had it that she even had connections to criminal underworld bosses, only adding to her formidable image.
Despite all her intimidating reputation and rumors, Lydia Chen was actually very sweet to her daughter and her friends. She even took on this case for free, wanting to ensure MJ's safety and justice. There was a bit of tension between her and Captain Stacy, given their usually opposing sides in the legal world, but they set that aside to handle the situation together this time.
It had been a chaotic week, but everything was handled quickly and efficiently. Still, Saga couldn't help but worry, so he followed MJ from a distance, just in case. Even though the main threat seemed resolved, trouble seemed to find her anyway. Saga wasn't sure if it was just bad luck or if MJ was somehow a magnet for danger. On her route home, whether in Midtown, on the subway, or even in Queens, he counted at least 9-10 potential dangers lurking near her. He couldn't believe she managed to survive all this time without someone watching her back!
Several times, Saga had to step in before MJ could cross paths with muggers and other shady characters. Thanks to his training with Master TAO, he had some new spells, including a "Sleep" and a "Stun" spell, along with his trusty portal spell. With his sling ring on his left hand, all he had to do was open a small portal, cast the spell on a single target from behind, and watch as they collapsed, confusing the others, who usually took their friend to the hospital. It was simple, but using these low-level spells all night until she was safely home taking its toll. Each spell cost him 150 DC units, with his small reserve he had to use them sparingly to keep up with her.

This week also marked the start of Saga's magic training. Master TAO explained all about the mystic arts practiced at Kamar-Taj, their effects, and properties.
Typically, new students begin with meditation and physical exercises before they're allowed to try actual magic. But Saga got permission to jump straight into practicing. His first exercise was using the sling ring to create portals. This required channeling magical energy into the sling ring, which acts as a focus, holding pre-set spells and runes. Besides channeling energy, the user has to maintain a clear image of the destination in their mind. The clearer the mental picture, the better the portal. If concentration slips even slightly, the portal can become unstable or fail to connect.
His daily practice and routine controlling his energy has proved helpful, making him able to use the sling ring with ease as he quickly mastered channeling energy into it. On his first try, he successfully created a small portal, simply focusing on opening it near the window in front of him.
The next challenge was creating portals to familiar places, like his room or school. Within an hour, he gained the "Portal Creation" skill and even leveled it up to level 2.
The following day, however, he encountered difficulties with Kamar-Taj's more advanced spells. Most of these spells require the use of Dimensional Energy, drawn from various dimensions across the Marvel universe. For a sorcerer to use this energy, they must channel power from other planes of existence within the multiverse. This energy can either be channeled directly or granted by extra-dimensional entities. To tap into these entities, sorcerers must often perform specific rituals and might even need to make promises, contracts, or sacrifices of some kind.
One of these spells is the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak—a powerful spell that summons unbreakable, crimson bands symbolizing Cyttorak's immense will. Legendary sorcerers like Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch have used it to bind nearly unstoppable foes like the Hulk and Juggernaut.
To cast it, a sorcerer must first connect with Cyttorak's dimension and then draw on its energy. Interestingly, past Sorcerers Supreme once fought Cyttorak himself, managing to reach an agreement that allowed them to tap into his realm's power. This deal granted sorcerers access to Cyttorak's dimension and thus the ability to summon the Crimson Bands.
However, only a few sorcerers can wield it. Casting a spell of this magnitude requires intense focus, discipline, and a steady hold on its vast energy, along with significant magical power for each use. This complexity means that the Crimson Bands aren't as simple as a spell that one can just summon on a whim; mastery of it takes great skill and dedication.
Master TAO observed early on... that Saga might face challenges using dimensional energy, especially when it involves an entity. This became evident when he tried to connect with the Vishanti realm—a common practice for Kamar Taj sorcerers. Yet, it appears Saga's Dragon Core is either unable or perhaps unwilling to tap into this energy.
This has been confusing since channeling energy from the Vishanti realm usually doesn't require any special approval for sorcerers. But despite following the usual methods, Saga currently cannot access any dimensional energy.
While this is a minor setback, there are other ways for sorcerers to cast magic. Beyond dimensional energy, sorcerers can also draw on personal energy, like life force, Ki, or innate magical energy. Saga, for example, could be considered a natural mage, with a body capable of producing its own magical energy. Similar cases would be Wanda Maximoff with her Chaos Magic or Agatha Harkness with her witchcraft abilities.
Master TAO explained that personal energies are only usable for abilities developed through focused mental training, limiting them to skills like astral projection, hypnotism, telekinesis, and telepathy. However, since continuous use of personal energy can drain a person's life force, sorcerers must also learn to harness external energy sources through meditation and strong willpower. Students at K'un-Lun, for instance, are trained to channel an inner energy known as Chi, which helps them boost their mental focus, willpower, and physical abilities to different extents.
One more accessible energy source for sorcerers is the universal energy within their home dimension. This type of energy supports conjuration, transmutation, and teleportation spells, often used in battle to create shields, weapons, or energy constructs. Activating universal spells usually requires specific gestures or words, which trigger a magic circle on the sorcerer's body—often around the hands, palms, or wrists. Some universal energies also allow astral bodies to interact with the physical realm when they have a dimensional anchor, like an artifact or an individual. For example, the Ancient One could guide Stephen Strange's consciousness safely through the Multiverse and back to his physical body by using herself as an anchor.
To help Saga develop his abilities, Master TAO provided books on methods for harnessing and channeling personal energy. However, most of these texts are in ancient languages, requiring Saga to rapidly improve his language skills to understand the instructions. Unfortunately, there's no quick fix—no app to scan and translate the ancient words—so he'll have to study them the old-fashioned way.
For universal energy, Master TAO provided Saga with hands-on guidance. Her explanations were clearer this time, using less cryptic words only simpler terms. She described harnessing universal energy as using one's personal energy as an "anchor point." Since Saga was used to controlling his Dragon Core daily, this process felt familiar to him. However, instead of holding the energy within, he now needed to extend it outward as far as possible to connect with universal energy.
Master TAO explained that universal energy is like a vast, raw energy field a nexus off all energy in this universe that were created by all matter in the universe, holding everything together—much like "the Force." Sorcerers can tap into this raw form of energy and convert it into magical power. However, it's not limited to sorcerers; other beings can also draw from this energy and transform it into their own personal energy sources, such as cosmic energy, Chaos magic, and Asgardian magic.
She also explained technical details, including the meanings of specific hand gestures, chants, and the mindset needed to perform them. The Activation Circle involves several hand gestures essential for activating magic with universal energy, many of which were already covered in my kata training with Master Drumm.
Some spells require chants or incantations in the original language of the spell, which aligns the caster's intentions with the spell's outcome. The reason for this is that in the supernatural world, names hold power. Whether it's the name of a being or the name of a spell, invoking it is necessary to bring the spell into reality. Generally Low-level spells often need only a single word or line to activate, like saying the spell's name. However, more powerful and complex spells demand longer chants before you saying it's name. Once a spell is mastered, though, a caster can often just say its name to activate it, except for rituals, which still require full incantations due to different rules.
Spells come with predefined abilities. For example, a fire spell has a specific effect by design. While its function is limited, the power output can be increased beyond the base energy needed for the spell by pouring more energy to the spell.
As long as a spell's incantation has a specific meaning and includes the right keywords, it will activate. However, reaching that level of mastery requires understanding magic's fundamental mechanics. Long incantations are rarely used in combat, as they make the caster vulnerable, and only certain mages can chant while moving without losing focus. If an incantation is miscast, the spell fails without returning the energy spent. This is why most Kamar Taj sorcerers rely on gestures alone during combat.
Though it sounds simple, connecting with universal energy is difficult in practice. So far, Saga hasn't been able to access it, possibly due to low energy reserves or another factor. However, many spells requiring universal energy can still be cast using his own energy, showing his Dragon Core is somewhat adaptable. Master TAO noted that energy from the Dragon Core is chaotic, which makes attacking spells more potent. There's also a noticeable difference in his magic's appearance; instead of the usual golden-yellow glow, his energy has a cold blue color.
Saga thought over the past week's events as he watched over MJ from a building's edge. Since helping MJ, Aunt Cass had been beaming with pride, saying her little boy has become a man which is really embarrassing as she never consider the time and place. Gwen teased him for having a hero complex, which he denied, saying it's only natural to help a friend – a girl at that in trouble. Even Felicia started to get off his back, her usual antagonism faded; she once tried being nice which is kinda awkward to look at, leaving them staring in confusion before Saga asked in concern for her, "Are you high?" and then she proceed to deck him and fuming, really what a tsundere….
There was another reason behind his actions: after defeating the two thugs, he gained experience points that he could use to upgrade his Dragon Core or A.D.A., yep both of which can apparently level up. The Core requires 200 points, and A.D.A. 150 points to level up, which probably increase the higher the level. Using spells in combat or sneak attacks also helps his skills grow and grants skill points for leveling up. He's used the sleep spell frequently, causing it to level up automatically, although he can also spend 10 skill points to raise its level.
Recently, he earned enough experience to level up his Dragon Core and A.D.A. Leveling up the Dragon Core doubled his energy reserve, and upgrading A.D.A unlocked a new skill that's been incredibly helpful:
Techno Interface lv 1/10: Allows him to interact with outside-world tech, with processing power based on A.I. and skill level.
Stats:
DCU: 450/762 (regenerates 7.62 units every 5 minutes)
STR: 68
SPD: 61
CON: 79
MAG: 89
SPR: 84
Stat Points: 12
He also received two bonus stat points for resolving 15 crimes, though he stopped earning additional points for repeated tasks after that. He's saving his stat points as a backup, preferring to train naturally to improve his stats—though it's slower, it's still effective.
I ordered A.D.A. to immediately test her Techno Interface, to see its strengths and weaknesses. The upside is that she can interact with my phone and computer by anchoring herself as a program, allowing her to roam the internet freely to gather data. However, her processing power is still limited by her low level, and her abilities depend on the quality of the device she's anchored to. My phone, though new, is an early Android model, so it has its limits.
Once, while gathering data, I connected her to the school server, but she was quickly flagged as a virus on any computer with a strong firewall. This is probably because her level is still low. Since technology will be key in this world, my priority is to level up A.D.A.
Throughout the week, while guarding MJ, he encountered various crimes in progress, like muggings and car thefts, all of which appeared on his HUD and location for said crimes in mini map. He was shocked at how much crime happens at night, wondering if this was due to being in Marvel's New York. He even suspected his system might be nudging him toward becoming a hero, though he didn't dwell on it because that was on another level of reality bending there, which is a headache to think about.
For most crimes, he used the portal-and-spell tactic, but others required direct intervention. Since he needs to handle these situations discreetly, he decides to get a costume to hide his identity. Not having any skill in sewing, he buys an Alpinestars Missile V2 2-Piece Leather Motorcycle Suit in black, along with matching gloves and boots, and customizes it to remove any unique markings. To finish his look, he adds a motorbike balaclava and a sleeveless black trench coat with an Assassin's Creed-style hood, giving him a shadowy, anonymous appearance. Edgy? Yep…
In one case, he stopped a stabbing attempt by quickly knocking the attacker down with whatever was available—a piece of wood, pipe, or even his fists. Sometimes, he'd find groups harassing people for trivial reasons. seriously they mug him just because he happened to look at them! Get a life people just how sensitive those thugs are or maybe they are just looking for trouble... who know really?
Saga was quickly annoyed and and he moved with swift precision. First target: one solid punch to the back, sending the thug sprawling to the ground. One down. Without missing a beat, he spun to the second thug, delivering a brutal knee-kick to throw him off balance, followed immediately by a clean punch to the head. Two down. The last two thugs barely had time to react before Saga dashed forward. He crouched low, closing the distance, and sprang up with a powerful uppercut. Three down. The last thug threw a wild right hook, but Saga was ready. He caught the thug's wrist with his left hand, twisted sharply, pulled the thug towards him and rotated his body, driving his right elbow into the back of the thug's head. Four down. Clean, efficient, and without a word exchanged.
Usually when the fight is over, he quickly told the shaken victim to call the police or he'd just grab a thug's phone and dial 911 himself. Then Once that was handled, with a quick leap, Saga was off, resuming his watch over MJ from the shadows. This past week, he'd racked up quite a few points for each takedown, whether using magic or physical skills.
In addition to experience and skill points, he also gets loot from every conflict he resolves. Usually, it's just small amounts of cash, maybe $10 per person, but one time he found almost $300 on someone he suspects was a drug dealer. Sometimes he finds knives, other times guns. A prompt shows up in his menu asking if he wants to loot the items, and he just presses "Yes." All the items are automatically collected by his system.
This has been really helpful, especially since his costume was expensive —the whole set cost him over $1,000. The extra cash has come in handy because he wants to buy a few items for self-defense, like a bat and a taser. and if he can save up enough money, maybe even buy a cutting-edge device for her to be anchored to. Another concern is his food intake; he's always eaten a lot, but since gaining the Dragon Core, he's been eating three times as much as usual. He's starting to realize that money is an issue, no matter which world he's in.
"Well, one step at a time, I guess…" Saga sighs, watching as MJ safely arrives home.
"[Boss, will you be handling more crimes? I've detected a few conflicts ahead.]"
Saga grins. "Yep, let's go get that money bag!" he says, activating "Augment" and leaping into the night.
-POV Change-
Inside the SHIELD control room, operators scramble, their faces lit by the glare of screens filled with flashing warning messages and rapidly changing numbers. On the main display, a pulsing portal looms ominously, its glow casting an eerie light across the room. One operator, eyes wide with panic, shouts above the chaos.
Nick Fury strides into the room with Agent Coulson at his side. Fury's commanding presence is unmistakable—he's tall and lean, with a rugged face that bears the marks of a lifetime spent in relentless vigilance. His left eye is covered by a black eye patch, He wears a long, black leather trench coat over a tactical outfit, including a black turtleneck and sturdy combat boots. His look is sharp and militaristic, with black gloves that add a stealthy, ready-for-action edge. His skin is weathered, his goatee and shaved head impeccably trimmed, and his one good eye is piercing and watchful, reflecting a no-nonsense authority.
"Director Fury! The portal—it's expanding faster than expected. Our calculations show it could reach critical instability within the month!" one operator calls out, voice tense.
Another operator, visibly shaken, adds, "The readings are off the charts, sir! At this rate…we don't know how long we can keep it contained."
The room fills with tension as operators glance nervously between their screens and each other. Fury's voice cuts through the noise.
"Everybody, quiet!" he commands. The room falls silent, all eyes on him as he looks over the crew with a calm but firm gaze. "I know this situation is alarming, and yes, the world has become a lot stranger than we're used to…" His voice grows louder with each word. "BUT STOP PANICKING AND ACT LIKE THE DAMN PROFESSIONALS YOU ARE!"
After a pause, Fury lowers his tone slightly. "Now, don't tell me what I already know. What steps have been taken to keep this quiet?"
One operator clears their throat, clearly nervous. "Sir, we've blocked all civilian feeds and restricted satellite access over the area. So far, no one outside of SHIELD knows about the portal's growth."
Another adds, "We have our best tech on 24/7 monitoring, but…it's only a matter of time before someone notices."
Fury nods, processing the information with a focused, unreadable expression. After a pause, he turns to Agent Coulson, who's been waiting by his side for orders.
"Coulson," Fury says firmly, "assemble the Strike Team, fully brief them on the situation, and have them deployed immediately in full gear."
Coulson nods, determination etched on his face. "Yes, sir. I'll gather them immediately."
Fury's gaze shifts to the screen, his expression narrowing as he watches the portal. His voice drops, low and resolute. "We're going to need every ally we can find for this."
The room falls silent once again, tension thickening as Coulson heads off to gather SHIELD's best, knowing that their mission—and the future—has just grown far more uncertain.
To be continue…
Author's Note: That's a wrap for this chapter! This one mainly covers how magic works in the Marvel universe—at least, the basics. I focused on Kamar-Taj here since I haven't dug into other Marvel magic systems yet. Most of the information came from the wiki, and if I couldn't find something, I just filled in the gaps myself. I think the groundwork is set, so starting from the next chapter, he'll be getting a lot of quests in the high school arc.
