Moving towards the southeast side of the village, Alex approached the edge of the Poison Mist Forest. His strides were quick, his gaze unwavering as he closed the final 100 meters between himself and the looming forest.
'Even from this distance, I can feel the deadly mist's presence. This mist is definitely not easy to deal with. The air here feels unnaturally heavy, and a faint, acrid smell is tingling my nose.' Alex's heart pounded in his chest as he sensed the malevolent force ahead.
The forest itself seemed to pulse with an eerie life; twisted branches and gnarled roots exuded an ominous energy. A low, unnatural hum resonated from the forest's depths, sending chills down Alex's spine.
It felt as though the mist was reaching out toward him, like a sentient force, deadly enough to poison anything that dared to come too close.
The villagers kept a safe distance from this place. The land surrounding the Poison Mist Forest was a bleak, lifeless expanse, stretching nearly a kilometer in every direction.
The soil was dry and cracked, as if all moisture had been sucked out. The sparse vegetation that remained was twisted and stunted, with leaves brittle and tinged with sickly shades of brown and purple.
No signs of life were visible—no birds, no insects, not even the smallest creatures dared to venture near.
The sky above this desolate land was often overcast, the clouds thick and heavy, as though they, too, were weighed down by the poisonous aura emanating from the forest.
Steeling his mind and calming his racing heart, Alex took light but quick steps toward the forest. The edges of the forest were sharply defined, with the mist marking a clear boundary.
The mist had an unsettling, almost luminescent quality, faintly glowing in a sickly hue of purple, deepening in color as one stepped further inside.
From the outside, the trees towered like ancient sentinels, their bark a deep, almost black shade of purple and brown, as if they had absorbed all the light around them.
These trees were unnaturally tall, their twisted branches reaching high into the sky, interwoven like the gnarled fingers of some colossal, sinister creature. The dense canopy they formed allowed very little light to penetrate, casting the forest floor into perpetual shadow.
As Alex finally stepped inside the Poison Mist Forest, several system messages began popping up, covering his field of view with translucent notification screens.
"Hmm, the system was quite silent until now. What's gotten it so interested?"
The system had been mostly silent during his previous encounters, but the moment he stepped into the forest, it seemed to have woken up with a flurry of warnings and notifications.
[Warning: You have entered a highly toxic environment. Extended exposure may lead to severe health issues. Proceed with extreme caution.]

Alex quickly scanned the notifications, his mind racing to process the information.
"So, this place really is as dangerous as it looks. If even the system is issuing a warning message." Alex muttered to himself. This was the first time the system had given him such a notice.
The Minor Poison Resistance skill didn't grant him complete immunity, but it was sufficient for now. Combined with his other skills, he felt confident he could explore without succumbing to the mist's effects.
Next, his attention was drawn to a new type of quest. As indicated, this quest was triggered by entering a specific or special location.
'According to what I know, certain monsters establish hierarchies and territories. This isn't uncommon; it happened in my previous world, but it's more complex here.'
Alex smiled bitterly as he recalled what he had learned at the academy and read in books about territory bosses.
Territory bosses were not ordinary monsters. In this world, where the jungle law of the strong prevailed, even civilized societies and intelligent races like humans were not exempt.
The concept was more pronounced and well-defined here. To be considered a territory boss meant they were not only a rank above others in the region but also significantly stronger and more terrifying.
They could not be compared to others of their kind, even if they were of similar ranks. And now, there were three of them present here.
"It's definitely not a simple task, but the hidden rewards should be well worth it." Alex grinned, thinking of the potential rewards.
Knowing the system's patterns so far, he felt the effort would be justified. His anticipation grew as he considered the challenges ahead.
Ultimately, whatever was hidden in this forest was likely connected to the disturbances in the village—and it was his job to uncover it. Not to mention, he was eager to discover the hidden treasure.
◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆
From the quest's description, it was clear that the Poison Mist Forest was divided into three distinct parts, each home to one of three terrifying monsters.
The side quest further revealed that the transformation of Opal Village from a once-normal, happy place into a haunted, gloomy settlement was intricately linked to these monsters. Alex suspected that this change was closely connected to the hidden treasure.
If he could unravel the mystery behind the specter's emergence in the graveyard, he might uncover the hidden treasure—or perhaps discover the treasure itself was the key to understanding the specter.
Using a stick to gauge his direction, Alex decided to head toward his right.
As he cautiously ventured deeper into the Poison Mist Forest, the environment grew increasingly oppressive with each step.
The trees loomed even larger and thicker, their trunks twisted and warped as if shaped by some dark force over centuries. The bark was rough and gnarled, mottled with patches of a strange, dark fungus that pulsed faintly in the dim light.
The branches were dense and interwoven high above, forming a nearly impenetrable canopy that blocked out any trace of sunlight.
The air was heavy with moisture, making it difficult to breathe. The mist that filled the forest was even thicker here, clinging to everything like a damp shroud. It swirled around Alex's feet, obscuring the ground and making it nearly impossible to see where he was stepping.
Every sound was muffled by the mist, creating an eerie silence broken only by the occasional creak of the trees.
Suddenly, the forest came alive with an unnatural rustling. From the thick mist ahead, something massive and dark began to move, the sound of creaking wood echoing through the silence.
The twisted bark of one of the towering trees seemed to ripple and shift, its gnarled branches contorting into something almost humanoid.
Before Alex could react, a twisted limb shot out of the darkness, and the world around him plunged into chaos.
