I glanced at my sister and noticed her hand was shaking a bit as she stared at the melted wax in filling her candle holder. Most of the candles were still burning. Beside Rose's, the candle meant for my niece had also burnt out.
Saffron frowned as he stared at the remnants of Anis's candle, his expression filled with concern.
Suddenly, Anis began to cry, her little face scrunching up in distress. The sound pierced through the warmth of the gathering, and I felt a rush of sympathy wash over me.
Rose quickly reached for Anis, cradling her in her arms. "Oh, sweet girl, it's okay," she murmured softly, her voice soothing. "It's just a candle."
Anis hiccupped and buried her little face in her mom's blouse, seeking comfort.
Dahlia stepped closer and gently patted her grandbaby's head. "Relax, baby. We got more candles," she said, her tone warm and reassuring.
