I yawned as my eyes felt heavy. But the sleep soon faded as Saffron picked me up from the table without warning.
Saffron's expression remained unreadable as he scooped me up into his arms, his steps steady and sure. "It seems my wife needs to get some rest," he stated, his voice as flat as always.
My face flushed at his words, the unexpected intimacy sending my heart racing. Despite his stoic demeanor, Saffron was surprisingly gentle, his strong arms cradling me securely.
"You don't need to carry me, Saff," I protested weakly, trying to push down the flush of embarrassment.
Ignoring my protests, Saffron continued to carry me outside. The houses cast long shadows under the glow of the moon, the silence only broken by Saffron's footsteps. They had a certain rhythm to them, as expected of a soldier.
"Leaving already?" Koyuki asked as she and my brother walked over to us.
I nodded. "I-it seems so."
