Saffron
"Saffron," Ma said as soon as she saw me. She smiled and gave me a tight hug. "Aww, my big baby boy is finally back!"
"Hi, Ma," I managed to say, hugging her back. Her familiar scent, the warmth of her embrace, it was comforting. It was home.
She pulled away after a moment, holding me at arm's length and looking me over. "You've lost weight," she observed, her brow furrowing. "And you look tired. Have you been taking care of yourself?"
I couldn't help but chuckle. "I've been trying, Ma."
She just shook her head, her gaze soft. "You always were a worry, Saffron. Always pushing yourself too hard."
I looked down, guilt gnawing at me. I knew I had worried her, disappearing without a word. But I had a mission, and I couldn't let anything get in the way.
"I'm sorry, Ma," I said, meeting her gaze. "I didn't mean to worry you."
She just sighed, reaching up to ruffle my hair. "I know, Saffron. I know."
