Chapter 40 - A Meal, a Joke, and Unspoken Tensions

As the meal progressed and they savoured the delicious dishes A-ri had prepared, the conversation flowed smoothly. Laughter and shared stories created a warm atmosphere at the dining table.

Eun-tae, ever the joker, couldn't resist a playful jab at Na-yeon.

"Just to confirm," he said with a grin. "Interviewing me isn't free, you know. Journalists have to pay their dues for a good story."

"Is that so? Well, I suppose I'll have to negotiate my terms, then," Na-yeon chuckled, catching onto his teasing tone.

A-ri, however, didn't quite catch the jest and shot a disapproving look at Eun-tae.

"Eun-tae, that's not very polite," she scolded.

"Oh, come on, you two. We're just having a little fun here," Quick to defuse any tension, Na-yeon intervened with a bright smile.

Eun-tae winked at A-ri, silently reassuring her that it was all in good spirits. The unspoken tensions from the past few days seemed to ease, and they continued their meal with lighter hearts.

As the meal drew to a close, Eun-tae looked at the empty plates and then at A-ri with a playful grin.

"I'll take care of the dishes," he offered.

"No, let me help you. We cooked together; we should clean up together," A-ri, not one to let him do all the work, shook her head and smiled.

Eun-tae chuckled, appreciating her sentiment.

"Alright, then. Teamwork it is," they gathered the dirty dishes and headed to the sink, side by side, ready to tackle the task together.

Na-yeon, sitting back and observing the couple, couldn't help but smile to herself. She had known A-ri for years, and seeing her so content and happy with Eun-tae warmed her heart. It was evident that A-ri had found not just a partner but a true companion who supported her in every way. Na-yeon realized that A-ri had indeed chosen wisely, and it made her feel grateful for her friend's happiness.

Yet, as she watched them work together, Na-yeon's heart also carried a touch of wistfulness. Her career as a journalist had often immersed her in the harsh realities of the world, exposing her to people's flaws and vices. This constant exposure to the darker sides of humanity had gradually made her guarded, sceptical, and at times, cynical.

Seeing A-ri and Eun-tae's relationship, so full of trust, mutual support, and love, awakened something within Na-yeon. It was a reminder that amidst the complexities of life, genuine connections were possible. Her demanding career had kept her perpetually busy, leaving little room for personal relationships. But now, as she watched her dear friend A-ri and her loving partner Eun-tae, Na-yeon felt a longing for something similar in her own life.

As the couple beside her laughed and chatted while doing the dishes, Na-yeon reflected on the walls she had built around herself. Her profession had demanded objectivity and scepticism, but perhaps it was time to find a balance.

She yearned for more than just the transient connections she often encountered in her line of work. It was time to open herself up, to embrace the possibility of deeper, more meaningful relationships—a connection with someone who could offer her the kind of trust and support she saw in A-ri and Eun-tae's bond.

As they finished washing the dishes, Na-yeon watched them with a wistful look in her eyes. She clasped her hands together as if she were silently praying. At that moment, she couldn't help but reflect on her own life. Her job as a journalist had exposed her to countless stories of people and their relationships, but it had also made her somewhat cynical when it came to matters of the heart.

She hoped that one day, she would meet a man who would be as caring, supportive, and loving as Eun-tae was to A-ri. The genuine affection between the couple was heartwarming, and it made Na-yeon realize that perhaps her work, which often required her to deal with all types of people, had somewhat clouded her judgment of individuals.

When Eun-tae and A-ri returned to the dining area after finishing their task, Na-yeon took it as her cue to leave. She began ordering a taxi, thanking both of them for their hospitality. As she worked on putting on her boots, Eun-tae couldn't resist one last bit of playful banter.

"You know," he said with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, "if you've been recording all our conversations, you could probably write an exclusive article about me."

Na-yeon laughed heartily.

"Ah, Eun-tae, you're too funny. But don't worry, your secrets are safe with me." She leaned in closer, her tone becoming more serious. "On a more serious note, I hope you two will be blessed with a little one soon."

A-ri and Eun-tae were caught off guard by the unexpected comment, their faces turning several shades of red. Before they could even form a coherent response, Na-yeon had already made her way to the waiting taxi that had just pulled up outside the mansion's gate. With a warm wave and a final parting jest, she was on her way, leaving A-ri and Eun-tae flustered and blushing in her wake.

A-ri and Eun-tae had just managed to return to their normal, comfortable selves when Na-yeon's unexpected comment threw them off balance. It felt like they were back to square one, with their faces flushed and their words stumbling over each other.

However, Eun-tae wasn't one to let such a situation linger. He didn't want to allow any embarrassment or awkwardness to come between them. As Na-yeon prepared to leave, Eun-tae took A-ri by the hand and guided her toward the main door.

Once they were alone, Eun-tae turned to A-ri, his eyes searching hers for reassurance. "A-ri," he began, "are we cool now? Can we be back to how we normally are?"

A-ri, feeling bashful but also relieved by Eun-tae's straightforwardness, smiled and nodded. "Yes, Eun-tae. We can be back to normal."

Eun-tae's gaze dropped to the floor for a moment, and then he looked back at her, a hint of playfulness in his eyes. "Does that mean we can sleep together again?"

A-ri laughed, the tension between them finally dissipating. "Yes, Eun-tae," she replied, "we can sleep together again."

With that understanding between them, they closed the main door behind them, ready to retreat for the night, their bond stronger than ever.

With their understanding reaffirmed, A-ri and Eun-tae returned to their bedroom, ready to settle in for the night. The atmosphere had shifted, and it was clear that the awkwardness from earlier had dissipated. They were no longer overwhelmed by desire and embarrassment, but instead, a sense of comfort settled between them.

As they stood beside the bed, they exchanged a silent agreement, knowing exactly how they wanted to arrange the pillows. Just like before, a set of soft cushions would separate them, creating a subtle barrier that allowed them to maintain their personal space while still being close enough to converse comfortably.

A-ri picked up the pillows, positioning them in the same manner as the previous night. She arranged them strategically, creating a gentle curve in the middle of the bed that indicated where their boundary lay. Eun-tae watched her with a warm smile, appreciating her thoughtfulness in maintaining the familiar setup.

Once the pillows were in place, A-ri turned to Eun-tae, her eyes filled with affection.

"There, just like last night," she said softly.

Eun-tae nodded, his gaze reflecting the warmth in her eyes.

"Thank you, A-ri," he replied, his voice filled with gratitude. "For understanding and for being patient with me."

"You're welcome, Eun-tae. And thank you for being honest with me. It means a lot," A-ri reached out and gently squeezed his hand.

With their unspoken feelings now openly acknowledged, they climbed into bed, each settling on their respective sides of the pillow boundary. It was a comfortable arrangement, one that allowed them to share an intimate conversation without the overwhelming rush of desire.

As they lay facing each other, the soft glow of the bedside lamp casting a warm light across the room, they talked. They talked about everything and nothing – their hopes, their dreams, their pasts, and their futures. The conversation flowed effortlessly, a testament to the deep connection they had forged.

Eun-tae shared stories of his childhood, his dreams of becoming a successful businessman, and his love for cooking. A-ri, in turn, spoke more of her passion for art and her desire to travel the world, capturing its beauty through her paintings as how she mentioned back on the art exhibit date. They laughed at each other's quirks and teased each other playfully.

Time seemed to lose its meaning as they bared their souls to one another. It was a conversation that transcended the physical boundaries of the pillows and drew them closer in a way that neither of them had expected.

Eventually, as the night wore on, their conversation tapered off into comfortable silence. A-ri turned onto her side, facing away from Eun-tae but still close enough to feel his presence. She closed her eyes, allowing the peacefulness of the moment to wash over her.

Eun-tae, too, settled into a serene state of contentment. He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from A-ri's face, his touch feather-light and filled with tenderness.

In that tranquil moment, as they lay side by side, the pillows that had once separated them now seemed insignificant. What truly mattered was the deep connection they had forged, a connection that transcended physical boundaries and ignited their hearts.

With a sense of peace and serenity enveloping them, they drifted off to sleep, knowing that they had found something precious in one another – a love that went beyond desire, a boundless connection, and a future that held endless possibilities.
