In the shaking of the bullock cart, the residents of Nanshan estate finally reached Yilin town after about an hour and some change. At this time, the sun had yet to rise, but there was a whiteness that permeated the sky.
There were already people in the town getting busy.
Xu Feng took in the ancient town past the gate. The town was a bit dilapidated and the infrastructure was poor. It was not as clean and prosperous as the ancient towns Xu Feng had seen on television, but it was still lively.
Villagers from all over the area gathered on the sides of the street to sell their own agricultural products. Just like going to the fair when he was a child, it was quite interesting.
After Erlang paid the price to stable the ox cart and the old cattle of the Nanshan estate, he began to unload the goods from the oxcart. Xu Feng could only stand on shaky legs as the other three arranged the goods he brought to sell.
He was their new young mistress, and although he wasn't favored enough to have a carriage, they wouldn't let him do any hard labor.
Xu Feng, on the other hand, was planning to make thicker cushions when he had time.
It was hard enough not to rub his poor, sore bottom right there in public. But he was the future young mistress of the Xuan family, and no matter how poor he was, he should try to maintain the family's dignity until his divorce.
After some time, Erlang took the bulk of the things, with a ratty-looking back basket on his back and another one in his big hands. Si and San each had a back basket of their own, although it was much less crowded than the two Erlang had.
As their group set off on foot, Xu Feng fully realized how unfavored the left-over servants in the Nanshan estate were. Looking at their clothes and the clothes of the villagers who set up stalls along the roadside, there was very little difference.
Looking at Erlang and a regular passerby setting up an area on the ground to sell wares, it was hard to tell who worked for a large family. Erlang's clothing was made from a simple material similar to a burlap sack.
The color was so faded, that you couldn't tell what the original color should have been or if it had ever been vibrant. The only good thing was that there were no unpatched holes, but it was definitely not sturdy or warm enough to last a winter in the north.
The Xuan family should be a wealthy family, and although the bones of the Nanshan estate were well done, the estate was rather empty before Xu Feng started adding his touches. Even the food they ate, while delicious, was plain. The white rice they ate when Lady Xuan was present was never seen again since she left.
The people of the town were dressed much nicer than Si, San, and Erlang. The quality of clothes the average town person wore was similar to Xu Feng's less plain set of clothing.
Luckily, he decided to wear the nicer set with the better material. It would make him stand out in the town, which he didn't like, but it would work out better when selling his betrothal gifts.
Xu Feng also brought the gold ingot Xu Zeng's (the original owner of the body) ger dad had given him. At first, he didn't want to use it, but it might be for the best.
As they walked from the animal sheds and stables near the town gate, the town in front of them was a bit dilapidated and the infrastructure was poor, but the variety of agricultural products was fascinating for the modern man, Xu Feng.
As they passed, many eyes were drawn to the silver-haired beauty. At first, more gers and women looked over before realizing the tall beauty was actually a ger. A ger with a deep red mole.
Xu Feng ignored the wandering eyes and continued looking for a few moments before he came back to his senses.
"Erlang, do you know where there is a good clothes shop? The more expensive, the better."
"Expensive?" San asked, clearly aware that her young mistress was currently without funds. 'Shouldn't they go to a cheaper store?'
"The best pawn shop would be good too." Xu Feng added for Erlang and smiled at the confused San.
"Yes, young mistress, I'll lead the way."
After around 15 minutes, the group reached their first destination. A well-ordered cloth shop with a busy young man setting up to open shop.
Seeing Xu Feng and his party make their way into the store, the boy greeted the group politely before running to the back of the shop to get someone.
As they entered the store, Erlang immediately stood in one corner, as though he felt out of place among both the coarse and silken cloth. His actions made him look even more muscular and large, but also more child-like.
Si and San both seemed out of place in the clothes shop as well. It was clear they didn't often come to town. The usually energetic Si was well-behaved and stood beside San as she curiously peeked around the store.
Xu Feng used this time to look at the items for sale in the most expensive clothes shop in Yilin. There were many different qualities of cloth in a variety of colors and patterns, but none of the colors were as vibrant as the ones sent from the Xuan family.
The patterns weren't as intricate or flashy, either.
It would be easy to sell his wares here. Taking in the small variety of trinkets and accessories, Xu Feng moved toward Erlang first. He covered the tops of Erlang's baskets with the plainer-looking cloth.
As he was doing the same for Si and San, a young man who looked to be in his twenties came from the back with the young boy.
"Welcome distinguished guest," the man zoned in on Xu Feng and his 'fancy' attire.
Xu Feng looked like a fat cow waiting to be slaughtered.
