Emily's eyes fluttered open, her mind foggy. She touched her head, wincing at the pain, and brought her hand to her face. Blood smeared her palm. Panic set in as she looked around, disoriented, and realized she was alone in the car. Memories came flooding back: the drive home with her husband, the crash, and then nothing.
"Robert!" she whispered, her voice trembling. She threw open the car door and stumbled out, her legs shaking. She staggered to the front of the car and found Robert lying on the ground, surrounded by a pool of blood. A scream tore from her throat as she fell to her knees beside him.
"No, no, no! Robert, don't leave me!" she begged, shaking him. His eyes flickered open, and he whispered, "Babe..."
With newfound strength, Emily scrambled to her feet, grabbed her phone from the car, and dialed for an ambulance. As she waited for help to arrive, she cradled Robert's head in her lap, tears streaming down her face.
