"No one likes being used." As Betsy Russell thought of what Jared Hughes had done, her smile faded slightly.
"Mr. Hughes?"
Betsy Russell looked up at Thad Drew, blinking her eyes in a perplexed way, "Can you read minds?"
Thad Drew shook his head with a light laugh.
"Still, the red wine tastes good." Betsy Russell swirled her wine glass with a smile, and then finished it in one gulp.
As she took a drink, her head was lifted, revealing her long and fair neck. Thad Drew seemed stunned for a second, but quickly regained his composure and lowered his eyes with discretion.
Betsy Russell thought about how she had worked so hard to please Jared Hughes, hoping that familiarity would breed fondness, that he would eventually fall for her.
But when she found out that his heart was only for Vicki Lindsey, she realized how foolish she had been in his eyes. If she had known from the beginning how much he loved Vicki Lindsey, she would have chosen to leave.
