Evelyn Campbell saw Jared Hughes come back and wanted to ask him what he and Betsy Russell had talked about, but she still held back.
Soon, Daisy came in with two big bowls in her hands, each filled with watermelon slices, each with a spoon on top.
Daisy took one of the bowls to old man Sanderson's door, knocked, and said, "Old man Sanderson, Auntie Green wants you to compensate her for the sweet potatoes you ruined!"
Old man Sanderson had previously asked her to steal sweet potatoes from Auntie Green's house.
"Nonsense! What do her rotten sweet potatoes have to do with me? It's not like I..." Old man Sanderson's voice grew closer as he angrily opened the door.
As soon as he opened the door, he saw Daisy smiling with the watermelon at the door, watching him.
Old man Sanderson frowned and said unhappily, "If you're eating watermelon, just say so! Must you make me angry to death?"
Daisy saw him reach out, silently moved the bowl aside, and smiled, "Where's the key?"
