Betsy Russell had smelled this scent before. It was the same scent she smelled on the first night she spent with Jared Hughes.
She also smelled it subsequently when she was trapped with Jared Hughes in the coffee booth.

If she were outside and smelled it for too long, the drug would take effect. Then, feeling hot and uncomfortable, she might even strip off her clothes in public!
Betsy Russell picked up the dress and shook it. A pile of powder appeared on the gray floor tiles, and her face became even gloomier.
She used a hairdryer to blow the powder off the dress, removing more of the powder.
Betsy took out a pill from her bag. This was a special tranquilizing pill she had made before. Taking this pill would prevent her from being affected by the drug powder.
After she had done all this, Betsy put the pill into her mouth and slowly put on the dress.
