The evening breeze was slightly chilly. Betsy Russell, dressed in an evening gown and draped in a shawl, still felt a bit cold.
The garden was quiet now. Betsy glanced at the bustling banquet hall and couldn't help but feel out of place.
She took a sip of fruit juice, thinking she would enjoy the peace here for a while before heading back in.
A kitten happened to crawl into the flower bushes nearby, so Betsy walked over there and squatted down, trying to coax it out.
At that moment, footsteps approached.
Betsy stood up, intending to leave, when she suddenly heard a familiar voice.
"Miss Hughes, I have to go. I'll leave first."
Betsy was standing behind one of the Roman pillars in the garden, her presence obscured from view. She couldn't see who was out there.
She had no interest in eavesdropping and was about to leave when she remembered the voice belonged to Enzo Scott, Heather Scott's cousin.
The Miss Hughes appearing at the Campbell family's gathering must be Isa Hughes.
