Jared Hughes sat by silently as Sir Hughes continued to chatter on about how to pursue Betsy Russell and make her happy.
After Sir Hughes finished speaking, he picked up a cup of water, took a sip from it, and paused to ask Jared, "Did you get all that?"
"I won't remarry her," Jared said resolutely.
"Are you trying to kill me with anger?" Grandpa Hughes slammed the cup he was holding onto the floor and glared angrily at Jared. "I'm telling you, as long as I'm alive, you can forget about letting Vicki Lindsey in the door!"
Jared stood up nonchalantly, "Grandpa, I have something to do at noon, so I'll leave first!"
As he left, Jared's departure caused Grandpa Hughes to angrily shatter two more cups. Finally, he laid back on the sofa, trying to catch his breath.
Just after stepping into the courtyard, Jared saw Isa Hughes not far away, laughing like a fool while holding a piece of paper.
As Jared was about to leave, Isa called out to him.
"Brother!"
